That's a really depressing attitude to have, not healthy at all IMO. You should at least enjoy what you're doing to a certain extent.

Chris - if the drudgery of working 'a job' for 30yrs scares you, then an alternative would be to start your own business of some sort. That way you're working for yourself not someone else, at least.

Yeah having your own business is pretty sweet, I must say. You have more control over the time/money balance and you don't answer to anyone directly (depending on your overheads of course).

A business selling stuff, you need to be one of two things;

1) offering something already available cheaper than the other guy (price)
2) selling something no one else is (niche product)

Find a way to do either of those well and you're laughing.

That was just an example! Really though? you need to do an absurd amount of diving to get qualified and then as an instructor you earn peanuts. Its basically a job to live a less than broke life as a travelling bum.

Anyway this is about me! Im happy! ive got a new job lined up, moving out (thank fuck), I dont owe anyone like a bank a single penny and Im healthy.

Im just saying as a general thing, that your job and what you do for the next 30+ years does not need to Define you. Thats all!

60 dives, assuming you'd be starting completely from scratch. And this isn't necessarily about money, it's about pursuing something you want to do.

My point is that with the exception of a few very specialised careers (brain surgeon, astronaut) most things only seem unattainable because people don't think about seriously enough.
