Mastering is mostly a term that is introduced when the label has to establish an excuse to drop a track they where interested in to begin with...
½joking and also not..

That being said, it can only help out to have problematic bits worked out before handing it over. But listening on a few system can be as rewarding as handing it over to someone else.

Get someone you trust to listen to it before you get another guy on it.

And if it needs mastering, I'd recommend someone like Fanu or Macc over someone mastering as a job, because they make good music themselves and are 'affordable'.
A lot of mastering engineers don't even listen to this kind of music - they want to turn your reese into mariah carey.

I hate earwigs with a passion. When I was about 10 years old I went into the garden shed on the first water-fightable day of summer to grab my Super Soaker. It was one of those ridiculous ones with the backpack for extra water... I slung the backpack on and before I made it to the tap to fill it up about a hundred earwigs crawled out of it all over my fucking back and head.
