To the original poster -

Burial was definatly born from the dubstep movement, his audience however far surpasses this scene, which is why he is so successfull.

Dubstep is all encompassing (thank god) as remarked on earlier in this thread.

There arn't really any rules which is why I for one love it so much.

it was released on HYPERDUB
that means it is dubstep afaik, even skream commented on ketamine.
also zomby the hyperdub ep, but had housebeat and post hardcore without a 2step beat ! ha!

see I have a problem with this sentiment, because I've seen it elsewhere...

when you start disconnecting/disassociating the hyperdub stuff out away from the dubstep umbrella then you begin to minimize the potential for a recognition of variety in this sound and start making questions like "how is burial even considered dubstep?" sound more logical

all the sounds out there fit into the puzzle somehow!! what happened to embracing the wild styles?

dont think there is anything wrong with asking cos at the end of the day a lot of people (most) have a very limited view of what dubstep is and this guy obviously wants to find out a bit more...

A lot of the fans that have been around for a few years still see it as the exciting genre full of possibilties, commerecial and experimental alike but people still come up to me when im djing asking me to play dubstep if it has a hint of 4x4 or 2 steppyness to it or if it doesnt have any "woblez" in it. Actually even when it is a heavyweight tune ive had someone ask for dubstep because I played some techno a little while before it?!!!

At least this geeza is trying...

because nobody knew exactly what dubstep is, at that time. and to be honest, ppl are still having a hard time labelling Burial. same about Milanese and other people who haven't obeyed boundaries and templates.

all the "mellow" dubstep producers will switch to funky/bassline/future garage/etc. the dubstep tag will be only for stuff like Skream/Benga/Caspa/Rusko/etc or Excision/Lukki/Babylon System/trillbass. 2-3 years from now it will be simpler.

I wouldn’t class burial as ‘dubstep’ and anyway the majority of his tunes are 120/130bpm which put them out of the traditional ‘dubstep’ boundaries but what really annoys me about ‘dubstep’ fans is that if a Techno/House/Grime Etc tune comes out on a ‘dubstep’ label it’s instantly classed as ‘dubstep’ , Even if it’s a straight up techno/house tune.

you missed out a very fundemental part, the breaks in pre dubstep or whatever, i dont think Toasty was on a minimal flex, nor SnD or Darqwan, came right after the demise of UKG and before the first conception of the minimal slit ur wrists style of halfstep toona.

Burial is some of my favorite dubstep to listen to. One thing I've grown to enjoy about the genre is the lack of restrictions most other forms of dance music have. It's a pretty open book - a lot can be done in that 140ish range, with the 2stepish beats, or without.

I don't play much of his music when I'm at a gig - i tend to listen to his music more when I'm in the car or chillin' out at home.

Fair question though.
