I was playing at a house party a couple of months ago and some wasteman who was far too pissed decided he needed a rest and sat on the deck with the record that was playing.

Re: whats the worst djing experience youve ever had?
I wouldnt say it was the worst but it was certainly the most bizzare....
Headlining a rave in the south of spain (circa 2004) with Breakfastaz and some of the other tearout breaks fam. Dropped the first tune, crowd started going nuts, then I heard a huge crashing sound as a car drove through the entrance to the club . Knocking people over left right and center as the car did donuts on the dancefloor, we were on a small raised stage and pretty much the whole dance tried to climb up on it to escape the carnage of the dancefloor. It was fuckin mental, 800 + pilled up spanish ravers running around like headless chickens trying to fit on a stage that comfortably held 5 people.
In fact most of my 'you wouldn't believe it if you wern't there' dj stories are from gigs in Andalucia. I used to love playing there because the vibe was so raw in the early days.

i was called in (twice) at the last minute to do a cabaret at the university, and both times the student groups who were putting it on didnt advertise it at all. at the first gig, about 15 people filtered in and out the whole night (6 hours), and the second gig got shut down at 9:30 because no one was coming and they had no patience lol.

my first gig:
-one deck wasnt working so i had to go virtual dj to deck
-sound kept cutting out COMPLETELY for upto 30 secs, did this bout 6 times
-some kid kept coming up to me telling me the sound was horrible (no monitors) and that there was no low end

cold blow wrote:what deck was it? theres nothing wrong with the higher end direct drive numark decks. ive mixed on so many sets of technics where the plates and pitch sliders are fucked and react completely differently differently to each other. mixing on two different decks should not be an issue for anyone who's played out surely?metaphase wrote:
2. In college I was playing a big 1,200 people halloween party , and the guys who brought the decks brought ONE Technics 1200, and ONE Newmark piece of SHIT for the DnB room!!
I told em 2 of em off before I played about how fucked their crew was for doing this, and had a full on brawl before my set. It was really terrible. Arguments and fights before a set are just really bad vibes, and having to balance your mixes between TWO opposite feeling decks (specially a shit Newmark) is just some kind of mind-fuck.
totally agree with you. as long as you have 2 decks and a working mixer you should be able to keep it going. if the sounds fucked at the rig then its not good, but the mixing equipment for me is not so vital. once youve played on a few different set ups its like riding a bike.
had a few nasty times at gatecrasher in notts. some crazy set up with the decks sitting on top of the main bass rig in room 2. all good for laptop/cdj dj's but on vinyl you're fucked, so much feedback and needles skipping all over the place. ben ufo managed to get it working on his SL3 but when it came to my turn and he took his stuff away, went back to acting the fool. not that it matters, no one was there to see it. ben played to me, 3 of my mates and the bar staff! such a shame cuz his set was wicked!

Re: whats the worst djing experience youve ever had?
My first little set in bar, person that set it up had no clue about anything. Tells me theyre all set up for vinyl and cd sets. I turn up with a bag of vinyl and a few cds, find out that one turntable is broken, one cdj is broken and the one working turntable was buzzin like crazy. Set went really shit
Re: whats the worst djing experience youve ever had?
My first set was after a concert of metal/thrash bands. the only people remotely interested were these fat teen bros, who I talked to before I played and they're favorite artists were rusko and chase and status. Once I went on it was a room of all the metalheads sitting around not really caring and then 4-5 of those bro fatties. At the beginning of my set I started to mix in Digidesign (joker), and when the intro hit, the chief bro just came up to the front and started yelling "AWW YEAH HERECOMES THAT BASSNECTAR SHIT!!! WOOO!!!" and then yelling how excited he was for bassnectar.needless to say he was confused about twenty seconds later.
Not terrible, just hilarious. I ran through so many situations in my head before my first set, and playing to a crowd of 95% metalheads sitting there doing nothing with about 5 fat sweaty bros loving it right in front me, was not one of those situations i imagined.

Re: whats the worst djing experience youve ever had?
had some girl come up to me and ask me to play some britney spears or "at least something with some singing" so I played Ms Dynamite - Ramp and the Bug - Skeng just for her
also played a gig about a month ago where there were no monitors, a half second delay from the speakers to the headphones doesnt make for easy mixing.

Re: whats the worst djing experience youve ever had?
I've had a couple monstrosities...
Once when the vibe was really going, was mixing very fast etc...... just dropped something, did a little dancing briefly, then ejected the wrong cd. Ultimate fail.
Couple weeks ago was playing a private party for some bird, was two other DJs supposed to be on after me neither showed up had to do a 3hr set, and i only had about 2 hours worth of tunes. Was basically playing tracks from start to finish towards the end. But I did get 3 DJs' pay
EDIT. Also I'm not sure why but it seems whenever I play I ALWAYS need to take a dump.

Feel Like this is me, took my technics 1210s serato and laptop to a house party in nottingham, was mad to start Djing in a basement, good feelings. Though Later on that night when a load of rudeboys turn up through the back door its bad times, especially when they are trying to rob your shit. I luckily got my stuff out of there but loads of stuff went missing.lowpass wrote:These are the very reasons I didn't want to do house parties/raves
And taking you're own equipment into a house with plenty of booze and no regulations is possibly my worse nightmare
I like my stuff and it would kill me to see it get wasted because "someone thought it would be funny to try and spin themselves on the deck" or some shit like that

Re: whats the worst djing experience youve ever had?
i brought my gear to a house party and the party got shut down early because waaaay to many people were crashing it so as I was helping usher people out of the house fights started breaking out on the front yard and I managed to break up a few but then someone sucker punched me out of no where and broke my nose
. Then by the time I got back inside and was cleaned up my mixer and my CDJ was missing but then it turned out the other dj grabbed my shit so it wouldn't get fucked up. It was quite the night

Re: whats the worst djing experience youve ever had?
to shake things up a bit one of my great experiences early on in djing...
i rocked up to this house party with the intention of doing a set. i was told i would be on after the guy that was on the decks then...two people jumped the cue, so hour sets each later playing to literally no-one, im ready to spin...then this cockstain jumps the cue again and starts setting up his traktor interface with the decks etc. By this point im a bit drunk and pretty pissed off...i grab my record bag, head outside to tell my mate thanks but im off. Just as im polishing off my cig some bird runs out saying "he's having trouble with his setup" so I walk straight up, say "whats the go" he responds saying his setup is actin' a fool. I immediately jump on the decks, and stay well clear of the banger/hyperwobbles that had been present most of the night.
Dropped some RSD, Addison Groove, some of my WAR Series white labels, Loefah, Kryptic Minds, Justified by Breakage...had the place seriously moving by the end...so worth sticking aroung to boot off the traktor guy, jump straight on with vinyl and kill it.
