Desperately need to see Pan's Labyrinth as del Torro has yet to impress me, although Chronos wasn't too bad.

Watched Address Unknown today by Kim ki-Duk. It was quite intense, and as usual the acting was below par, but there were some hilariously dark and some achingly sad moments.
Anyone watch his films? They are pretty unique and I can't think of anyone who makes films quite like this guy. They tend to be allegorical, and at times extremely difficult to watch, but there is something that is intensely watchable about them.
My favourite from him (plotwise) is Bad Guy, but The Isle has some amazing cinematography. I've yet to see Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring, but can't wait.
I bought Real Fiction but am working myself up to watch it, as it looks pretty hardcore.

I've also seen Lady Snowblood and the first Lone Wolf & Cub movie recently which were incredible. They are Japanese vengeance movies made in the 70s.
It's extraordinary to think that these kind of films were being made way back then, virtually the blueprint of films like Kill Bill, Park chan-Wook's vengeance trilogy, etc. From the plot to the spurting blood it's pure manga, well actually they are originally comics, but the films themselves really feel like they were light years ahead.

Went to the cinema a few times in the last fortnight.

Started off well with The Prestige. Very very impressive film with the ever reliable Christian Bale (Britain's answer to Jonny Depp?) and director of the 21st century for me, Christopher Nolan. I've not read Christopher Priest's book, but the film was well paced with some fine acting and great ideas. I even liked Bowie's cameo as Tesla.

Saw Borat a few days later, which was much funnier than I expected. Some cringeworthy moments, and outright horrorshow moments, but loads of laughs.

Then saw Casino Royale because Pan's Labyrith was full. What an utter river of effluence. I haven't wasted 2 hours so unwisely since I saw Splitting Heirs at the cinema.
The only redeeming moment was the free running chase, but even that was tarnished by Daniel Craig's running, which looks like Mel Gibson's 'move my arms faster to make it look like I'm going faster'-style runnning.
Eva Green's English middle class accent was deplorable.
Mads Mikkelsen's talent was absolutely wasted - Mads stick to top quality Danish films, not drivel like this mate.

Yeh I s'pose you can say I wasn't impressed by the latest B(l)ond installment.

Looking forward to The Fountain though.

kim ki-duk is one of my favorites

address unknown was ok but i wasn't crazy about it. same for the isle

the masterpieces are 3-iron and especially Spring, summer, fall, winter... and spring. bad guy is aces too.

samaritan girl is pretty good, but its pretty similar to sympathy for mr vengeance which is a much better movie

yeh, my mate was loving 3 Iron. I've been trying to find it in HMV as I get a discount there, but to no avail unfortunately.

Will be dropping hints to the missus about SSAW for chrimbo :)

Will check out Samaritan Girl when I can.

As for Park chan-Wook --- the guy is a don. The Vengeance trilogy is almost THE pinnacle of film making for me. I simply cannot tire of these films. They maybe flawed in some ways, but aesthetically they are practically unrivalled, in particular Oldboy.

yeh, Cut is fucking twisted but with excellent dark sense of humour that runs through a lot of Korean movies.

JSA was the first Park chan-Wook film I saw. The cinematography was out of this world. And it was a damn fine insight into an issue that I didn't know much about.

Tale of Two Sisters has been sat on my shelf for 2 months - unwatched. Need to motivate myself to watch this.

Everytime I show this to someone who hasn't seen it their eyes pop out of their heads.

Simply fantastic.

3 Iron is an absolute masterpiece!!! Am glad mans are on it.
Love asian horror big time. Despite the fact that they almost always involve long haired women out for revenge i still get the shit scared about of me every time i see a new one.
Apart from the rings/ju-ons, etc i proper enjoyed One Missed Call and Phone (incidentally both about mobile phones with bammy ringtones).
Best film i saw of late was Ping Pong, bare jokes and with a genuine feel good factor.

i tried watching one missed call but really hated it

miike has got so many better films than that, like happiness of the katakuris, zebraman, the bird people of china, audition, etc

i've seen a bunch of them though and a lot of em suck

i'm really into asian cinema and horror but this new wave of jap horror is really generic to me and i'm not into it

dark water, ju on, and the like just do nothin for me

i started watching rampo noir last week though and its good so far although i only watched the first two vignettes and half of the third

yeah man, survive style 5+ rocked although sometimes felt like a 2 hour music promo. still, had x-amount of classic `moments`, best of all was the two girls sitting in the cafe, the conversation going something along the lines of......
girl writing mail on phone:"so what happened to you?"
heavily bandaged girl:"oh, some guy kinda tried to rape me"
girl writing mail on phone, doesnt bat an eyelid: "oh, i see"

feel you on the miike tip, nothing beats audition for me. have u seen gozu? weirdest film i ever saw. didn`t like it especially in terms of narrative and pacing (there was none) but am glad i saw all the same, the madness was undeniably gripping.
actually forgot one missed call was a miike film. it had some good moments and the premise itself was pretty cool so was watchable enough.
beyond the first ring i dont really regard any asian horrors as out and out great films, they just have enough creepy as fuck moments to make me wanna watch.

after ping pong, best japanese film i saw of late was Taste of Tea, def check it out if u haven`t yet, like survive style 5+ a little known gem.

yeah gozu is really neat. its very david lynchy.

one missed call made no effort to hide the fact that it was ripping off the ring formula in the most generic way. i didn't finish watching it though.

i have not seen taste of tea but i do have this pic Image

i love mamet. state and main is one of my favorites of his. also very much love wag the dog, glengarry, and oleanna. the thriller tag on this movie kinda had me half expecting something like spartan, which was ultimately forgettable but i knew it was gonna be some dark shit. stuart gordon was also a good indicator. cute Imagejeff combs cameo too.

anyway, yeah its a fucking awesome movie. watch it.
it ranks among mamet's best and gordon is in top top form. best thing he's ever done.

kudos all around. through and through. top notch film.

Koyaanisqatsi

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PirH8PADDgQ

it has the most amazing music and the picture itself is breath taking. granted i was pretty cained at the time lol. but its definately worth a watch.
