Funny how the original is ten times more effective than the remake. Just goes to show that what you don't see can have more effect that what you do see.

Thing is when I was watching that film I kept thinking how both the British and Americans also did experiments on their own men. Sit them on an island and detonate a nuclear bomb and see what happens to them... and in a few decades deny that it caused them to develop leukemia and for their kids to be born deformed (or still born). I wouldn't be surprised if 'we' did medical experiments too but it's all wrapped up in secrecy.
Yeah but you're saying that like the americans or british made men behind the sun. It's not westerners pointing the finger, it's someone who was a victim of it showing what happened.
Fair point. Incidentally, I think the Japanese guy who made it received death threats, which struck me as ironic.

The worst scene for me wasn't the one with the little boy, it was with the two cats. Maybe I have become desensitised to human suffering :?
Apparently the cat scene is real and the director was appalled because he was showing what happened to his family and friends etc and people were more disgusted by what happened to the cats.

The worst scene for me was the pressure chamber I think.
Yeah, really. The scene with the kid fucked me up the most, heart breaking stuff right there.

See I don't like La Haine, it tries too hard to be cool (well I do like it I just don't think its as good as it is made out to be). I can remember a kid in my class at uni got slated for wanting to write his dissertation about it.

Oh, I feel that, for sure, but like...that kind of adds to the brilliance of the movie for me because the characters remind me of people I've known irl...

Like, you know, going out of their way to act tough. Doing stupid/violent shit without really thinking it through. etc. etc.

It seems like an essential part of growing up (especially in urban areas) for most people, going through that "gangsta" phase.

Yeah, the bits where they deliberately antagnoise the police reminds me of the daft shit we used to as kids just to get chased by them

I love the scene in the toilet with the old guy, "Nothing like a good shit..."

i've read interviews with the director of the movie about his reasons to make it.
at the time he was making the movie he felt that the way foreigners around paris get treated was calling for certain consequences which eventually came trough in 2004:

when the movie came out people accused him being a cop-hater, trying to evoke hatred while he wanted to show the potential consequences towards discrimination on young immigrants/coloured people.

we should have something like that in brussels too,
and "les barons" could be our very own "la haine" :)

Watched this the other day, and it really did leave me gobsmacked. Fairplay, twisted.

Oldboy is a great film that made me think WTF after watching it.

Actually, now I think about it the ending to The Mist left me pretty cold inside too.

The scene with kid is real too apparently. They obtained the body of a young boy who was killed in a car crash for the scene.

I'm surprised nobodies mentioned Stroszek, an utterly brilliant devastating film;
