A book I've just finished reading had this interesting extrapolation: Several hundred (or even thousand) years from now humanity will have evolved superior resistance and tolerance to the bad effects of drugs and alcohol. This will happen through natural selection because slowly but surely the non-tolerant will remove themselves from the gene pool due to failure to breed/grow old enough to breed.
I'm not entirely convinced it'll happen on such a short timescale but I'm holding out!

in responce to many of the people that have said "yes", think of what would happen to this country.
If all drugs were made legal (which is very unlikely) then the UK would become a hub for all the other drug dealers in the world. it would become a HUGE warehouse for dealers and cartels to hold masses amounts of gear before shipping it off to the rest or europe or the world and all in the confort of it being legal.
If it gets regulated, then how much. booze isnt regulated is it? anyone can drive around with 200 bottles of whiskey in their car, or keep 200 crates of carling in their fridge and thats fine, you might have a drinking problem, but thats ok, your not braking the law.
I do think weed should be made legal, but it never would be, esp with all the fuss the government has out out recently, they'd be going back on their word, and the government doesnt want to be made to look silly now do they

some people seem to think that because it's illegal its hard to get....it aint.....
so sayin oh a drugs illegality helps stupid humans not fuck up doesnt really make sense.
anyone who thinks some drugs are bad and wants to ban em - get em off the street etc.. should look into reasons why these people wanna get out there skull anyway, and then see if u can tell em there wrong and should be locked up and have no freedom for a bit

I think thousands is probably more likely, but it's not exactly unprecidented... there's a fair bit of talk to suggest that South East Asians tend to have lower tolerance to alcohol due to a couple of millennia drinking tea when everyone else had to brew beer or wine to keep water fresh for a long time. Europeans developed a genetic tolerance to alcohol and the Chinese developed a really amazing tea industry.
The fact that you could probably still drink me under the table goes to show that there's a bit of nurture in there as well as the nature though!

i don't know if i think [illegal] drugs should be made legal, but i do find it rediculous that alcohol is legal. the short and long term damage it does to our bodies is appauling, not to mention the strain it puts on society. Have you ever seen those programs where they follow the police/ambulance around for a saturday night? Literally every assault/injury/criminal damage is caused by people getting trashed. It's discusting.

I agree, alcohol can change a person just as much as drugs can.
I don't think that making in illegal would solve the problem though.

Where've I got this rep from? Not that I mind
Technically, the Chinese are East Asians

It's supposed to be due to a missing enzyme, it's why some orientals go red the moment they have a sip of alcohol. Also it's dependent on region. The ones from further north tend to be much better at holding their alcohol. I'd definitely recommend against challenging anyone from the inner Mongolia region to a drinking contest. My family's from the south though.

It needs a sensible and tolerant approach with both sides of the argument taken into account. Personally, I think drugs are a waste of time and money, I gave up years ago because I couldn't be bothered anymore, I got tired of the 'scene' and the people in it. I saw lives ruined by drugs, it is a horrible waste both mentally and emotionally.
I'm not going to slag anyone off who wants to partake, I'd just rather I wasn't around when they do.
Put it into a 'musical' perspective, without talking about of sphere's like writers/actors/artists, how many icons of music have lost their lives to drugs. Lives that could have realized so much potential if they'd not OD'd or gotten into degenerative health problems because of substance abuse.
You can make your own lists up.

No, it means you do whatever you want to do geezer.
That's just my two pence worth. I'm not saying anyone died from a skunk spliff (someone's gonna prove me wrong now...) but y'know, everything in moderation.

Decriminalization in Portugal:
http://www.cato.org/pubs/wtpapers/green ... epaper.pdf
The Czech Republic followed Portugal recently.
In a couple Latin-American countries cannabis and in some other countries all the drugs are decriminalized.
In many other countries, cannabis is already decriminalized.
Decriminalization and legalization is coming closer. Information, sensitization are the keywords.

Yes, there are many idiots, but there are also too many people who pop whatever they get, without knowing what they're taking or what it will do with them.
By the way, everyone who wants dope, can easily fix it.

Remember. There's a difference between drugsabusers and drugusers.

"This attitude raises the critical question of why society tolerates – indeed encourages – certain forms of potentially harmful behaviour but not others, such as drug use."
There were plenty of other "risky activities such as base jumping, climbing, bungee jumping, hang-gliding, motorcycling" which were worse than which "many illicit drugs".
Professor Nutt wanted a more realistic view on the drug policy in the UK, he got fired.

Highly addictive drugs like heroin should stay ilegal, but the likes of weed, acid, shrooms, ketamine, E should be on the shelves in asda and tesco standard.
