As someone has said selection and "vibe" is important, I've never Djed but I know that. Good Mixing is a bonus albeit an essential one.
What about playing gigs with a laptop and mixing software? How does that go down as opposed to say decks?

Then there is always the litany against fear. Memorize and repeat when you experience fear:
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

If it is good - most people won't care.
I remember when Serato first came out, there was lots of backlash about not "truly being vinyl"... but a few years later, most vinyl dj's use Serato.
There might be a few in the crowd who are purists, but they usually find something not to like anyway. Most people only care about how well the set is done, the selection, the vibe, and at least *some* evidence that you are doing something, rather than just checking your email.

Thought Id hijack my thread again for a bit more information on mixers and cdj's.
Im looking to spend what would be about £5-600 for a mixer and 2 decks new, but I'll hopefully nab stuff cheap on ebay.
recommendation would be hugely appreciated as I know theres alot of experienced dj's lurking about.

So essentially, at basic houseparty level, you could use VDJ and a laptop/system setup?
That's interestin.

I get well nervous before sets, even more so before Live performances (soo much to get right!!). But for me that's half the fun, I wouldn't get nervous if I didn't give a shit, if I knew I didn't have the potential to put on a great show. I usually have a pint before and one during (don't want to overdo it), brain lubrication is a must for me.
I was staying with a well known name whilst he was playing at Bloc, it surprised me how nervous he got before his set! But he still went up there and murdered it.
I guess it's like rock climbing (for me at least), get well nervous when I'm outdoors trying something at the peak of my ability, especially something I haven't done before. But once I'm doing it, it's fun, the adrenalin rush, the sweaty hands etc etc. And when it's done and you look back thinking, 'fuck, i nailed it', it's good!
I don't think it helps I'm a massive emo as well.

Yeah, why not? I've DJ'ed tons of house parties using Ableton & Midi Controllers... the place was always hyped and no one said shit to me about not being on wax. Some of em were afterparties of gigs I had just played at ... but others were just house parties being put on by friends, and they asked last minute if I could bring my kit with me when I roll through to DJ for a bit... so I did.
Know your tracks and read the crowd... Rocking a party is rocking a party.
