get out of your house and go to a party, have a few drinks. watch how people react to drops and certain sounds. I just got back from wmc and I couldnt wait to get back and start pressing keys.

Get off the computer for a week or so. Walk your dog that's grown fat from neglect because instead of walking him you fed him less as this was preferred to losing time that could be spent producing, treat that girlfriend you forgot you had to a walk in a park, call those relatives you constantly ignore because you're too busy tweaking a synth. Having a life outside of staring at a computer screen listening to a low pitched square wave buzzing in your ears is sometimes the simplest of remedies. You come back refreshed with new emotional material to convey and new experiences to translate into wobbly bass lines. Even if that emotional material is all very depressing, like your girlfriend dumping you for never noticing her and your dog dying of a heart attack or your relatives not remembering who you are because in the brief moment you took a break from production you realized that ten years had passed without your even noticing...
Totally true but at the same time depressing me a bit as I feel like music has ruined my life sometimes. All this work for very little in return makes me wonder why I do it sometimes but at the same time I am pretty much worthless outside of making music. Without it I become an extremely boring individual *sigh
totally with you... if you want a beat with some heavy swagger and if you want heavy vibrations, i'm your guy.. but if you want skills of any real value, look elsewhere... kinda depresses me sometimes. people like me just have no use in our society. everything would be gravy if everybody went about their daily lives bumping heavy music and skanking like crazy... why can't the world be like that?? that's what MY world's like

I'm pretty good at wanking myself into a hardcore pornography induced coma... Does that count?

Yeah I know just the right moment to pull up so I don't go too quick.

I make some pretty nice hardwood floors too but no one gives a fuck about that.

Pretty good cook too I suppose.

i don't ever underrate myself, i think i'm a great musician. it's just that it's all i've ever cared about, and most people don't see any use in that.

I get inspiration a lot of a the time from sounds around me... go outside and listen to sounds, analyze them try to separate them as synth controls like waveform, filter, and amp envelope... Also, try spending time creating sounds when you are not "feeling it" enough to actually make a good track... I'll spend hours making sounds that i might or might not ever use, but then once my creative energy is flowing I'll pull all that random shit I made outta the files and put it to use.... DO YOUR SOUND DESIGN AND MUSIC MAKING SEPARATELY!!!! it's caused me problems

Another thing that got me very motivated is when I saw my friends who thought it was so cool to spin vinyl... Right when I got home I was extremely motivated to actually do something musical (not to burn on DJ's but it bugs me when people dont' know the difference between a producer and a DJ, everybody seems to think a DJ who plays a good track is a good musician, they're not!!)

Probably my best source of motivation, go get really baked of my ass.... then all I every wanna do is make music, and it seems to just come to me.... you just need the weed to succeed man!

I know it's not that simple though, cuz even after all this i still find myself stuck quite often.

I don't think this is what you are saying at all but it reminded me of something I do sometimes that works like a charm. Just rinse it out on the decks for about a half hour. Always seems to get me focused on what I want to do production wise.

I learnt an invaluable technique the other day and eager to try it how now. I wish someone would tell me how to get Massive working in Ableton though.

The actual VST isn't showing up in the list.......but can I make a bass in standalone then drag/automate?

Surely not.

It is probably either not in your vst folder or you just aren't finding it. In the auto set up it might have stuck it in a folder called VST Plugins or Native Instruments or something like that, expand all your folders to see. Can't remember what it does exactly because I don't have Massive installed atmo.

Do not sit down at the buttons until you have an idea. This is very important. Go and live life away from your computer for a while so you can bring some of it back to your music.

When you've made something you think is pleasing, go to bed. Sleep. Wake up. Is your new tune playing in your head? If not, can you recall it? If you can, it's good. If you can't remember it, it's bland and forgettable. Get up out of bed, go into your studio and delete it immediately. This ensures you don't add to the sea of insipid blah out there.

A good piece of music is worth remembering. If you can't remember it, how the hell is anybody else going to?

I've found taking a few days off from music all together helps, not even listening to any. Do some gaming, hang out with the missus, watch some movies, etc. As I do that I normally come up with a few melodies in my head and sing them straight into my iphone to work on when I'm inspired again.

Also found changing software helps big time. I moved from FL to Ableton recently and it's really spurred me - trying to get a tune a week done just now.

I think a software change and a new badboy synth would do me wonders. I made a track for the DSF comp but decided upon uploading it as it just wasn't good enough.

But I seriously need to start making my "own" tracks instead of remixing, which whilst it's fun you get a reputation for being a bit of a Mt Eden wannabe.
