I can't help but chuckle when I think back about 5 years and most of what was called Dubstep had a bare minimum of similarities to each other, but just enough for people to categorize it thus. Burial vs Loefah vs Kode9 vs Shackleton... they were stylistically very, very distinct. They were all mutations in their own right. These days all of the sub-genres are there because 90% are trying to reproduce what's already been done and the other 10% are keeping the mutation alive and taking it forward in new directions...

...and even this isn't new. When the cart's leading the horse (as in people trying to make music to fit a genre tag) things start to stagnate and drive those with short attention spans to try something else.

I'm not going to say bass music because people will think I mean hardcore or some other genre you listen to when on speed (ie. they'll get confused and think I'm saying 'base music')... I'm going to continue saying Garage to people I don't care to speak much too... Or if not I don't actually mind getting deep and saying

"Well I like a bit of everything from classical to grunge, but I really enjoy any trance-enticing deep forms of EDM... I've always been a massive fan of Garage, Grime, deeper forms of Dubstep, Housey bits, all sorts"...

"Oh right, you into Funtcase and Datsik?"

"Well nah, they're not really my thing... ACTUALLY."
