I remember making some techno shit on whichever version of Fruity Loops was out in 2001...possibly 2000 but I don't remember exactly. lol it actually completely put me off even thinking of making music on the computer until 2005.

and I know some heads who still use version 4....and they say there's little reason to upgrade for them.

I think 9th Wonder still uses one of the earlier versions.

It really does not matter what I use. I have a plan before I sit down, I know what I need to do!

i recently started using edison, thought it was a little shitty tool for editing audio... I was wrong

record any vst or drum patterns into so it is a wav file, then just drag that into the project. Cuts down like 90% on CPU and it's awesome for resampling. I use it all the time.

I've used FL, Ableton, Reason, Logic, Cubase and found that, personally, FL just seems to work for me.
I remember Mala saying in an interview that he uses Reason because he can transfer what he has in his head down into Reason easily and just the way he wants it.
This is the exact same reason that I use FL (version 5 and I'm not upgrading). If I have something in my head I can get it down exactly how it sounded "up there" into the program.
FL can do pretty much everything every other program can do and I love using it. Nuff said

My 2 cents...

ive been an avid user of fl for almost a decade. I used it to produce many genres of music with it, some of my friends even got to develop styles of their own thanks to fl's very unique way of working...

in the end i ended up using thrid party vsts... (whoever uses the stock sounds in their daw )... or REALLY corny fl sounds that i was proud of because they were a statement of my pride of using fl... (think souldja boy)... so when i switched to other daws (not for long, i gave up on music shortly after that.. im back)... i realized that fl was way more straightforward then a lot of programs... but that noone could ever argue with... its sound algorythms are not as ... developped as the ones in say pro tools or cubase...

at first i thought it was just me.. but we made tests of it.. and there is a flatness to fl exported mixed down beats that is characteristic of it... its just colder then some daws... i tend to think that reason has the opposite problem as it kinda makes everything more round and fluffy soundwise.... in the beginning i got scared when i realized that.

BUT Heres the thing tho : it took me a while to understand but here, i got it : anyone who knows their tools right end up knowing what to boost and what to cut : they end up knowing how their daw is gonna color the sound... thats just called knowing ur tools... so even to that, there IS a solution : practice.

in the end i ended up understanding (truly) what people mean when they say its just a matter of knowing ur tools..

one of my friends does those loud and serious rap megaprods and recieves def jam checks on a regular basis. he uses fl.

know ur tools. and if u change em, its got to come from ur heart, not from the yipyappin around.

Why is Digital Performer NEVER brought up.. I had a go at it awhile ago and it seemed alright..
I just never hear about it.

I also think that the interface has a certain look to it, which makes it look a bit less serious than other DAWs. But then again, Ableton is quite similar in this regard.

In the end, it's the name, the interface, and all the aesthetic stuff which doesn't mean a thing when you're actually making beats.

Just to answer the question in my opinion... I have been around long enough that I remember seeing it when it was new and back in those days it WAS a toy basically. Obviously they have done some major upgrades over the years and you can do a lot with it but a lot of people just think of it the way it was. I think it's a bit different with the dubstep heads tho. A lot of younger heads that wouldn't even remember the humble beginnings of the program plus it was pretty much responsible for this music in the early goings. But yeah it doesn't matter what you use. It is what is coming out of the speakers that matters.

fl is powerful as hell, i just moved on from it to cubase and renoise because they suited my workflow better when deadling with automation and working with audio directly, but i stopped using it in like 05 so may be better, just more comfortable in current environment and way it works with my hardware
the daw means a shit. there are loads of big name producers using fl.

Ha no one uses it that's why. Years ago it was close to breaking through as a top DAW but it just never happened. I dunno maybe it sux?

More of a film thing for some reason.

Maybe it wasn't successfully cracked? There is no better marketing than free samples, whether you like it or not.
