We shouldn't be scared off making sub-genres. People will always try to put a name on things. I think all the older heads in the scene keep on looking back at what happened to jungle and garage and think that the same will happen to Dubstep. It won't, dubstep is going from strength to strength. Police arn't trying to shut down our raves, theres rarely any violence to be heard off. Everything about Dubstep is fresh and adapting. From Mt. Eden to Mt. Kimbie theres such a fresh palette of sounds. I went too see a metal band and in between sets they were playing Loefah over the PA, you look in the guardian and they have articles on Ikonika, go to DMZ and theres still people queing up at 3/4 to get in. So what if people try to put tags on things, they may be right they may be wrong. Dubstep won't die because of it.

My point in the article is not that there is no separation of sounds, though

a) the core of dubstep remains strong, whatever other sounds might be forming around it and whatever might happen in the future - APPRECIATE WHAT YOU'VE GOT.
b) separating musical styles into "hard" and "not hard" is an over-simplification and ALWAYS destructive. If you write off all hard music as "brostep" you end up with a dreary washed-out music snobs' deep house / intelligent d&B situation, but if you insist that everything HAS to be hard, "sick", "disgusting" etc, you end up with a gabba-techstep-metal sausage fest and it's just as boring. VIVE LE DIFFERENCE.

the real test is the parties, and around my parts the music at the parties is still super varied and no one, in my circle, talks about a this side vs that side thing... the only discussion is usually, feeling this? yeah, tune! or nah, waiting for the next one, cheers!

You mean party as in a night or an actual party. In London, its sometimes mixed at clubs. Only people I've seen pushing the harsher sound are N-type & El-B and they ofter get slots the less harsher sound. Other then that its quite polarised, you either go to see Borgore & Flux Pavillion or you go to see Joy Orbison & Mala. Parties are normally just filth. Try putting on something else and it gets turnt off. Thats what I've seen anyway.

i dont mind some jump up stuff... there just needs to be a bit more quality control of late, as making 'music' simply on the basis of trying to outfilth the track before you, isn't actually music at all.

nights here are pretty varied half the time, the other half of the time it's a whole night solely devoted to the half-time "filth" sliver of dubstep, but those are easy to spot and avoid. it helps having portland and vancouver close by, those cities get down and have, imho, a little more of an open mind when it comes to dubstep, than seattle does.

i was referring more towards parties, they're more fun usually than the big name nights, especially when we've got our own lil rig at these parties people mix up all kinds of stuff and nobody's stroking their chin, something you get a lot of at the headliner nights. My only beef with the people who like to just stand there and listen is, why can't they stand and nod somewhere other than the dancefloor? i'm trying to get my boogie on, but you're just standing there, staring at the dj like he's doing something visually more interesting than the sounds he's playing... bounce mofo!! if not to the beat, then at least to a cozy corner or chair sorry, little off topic rant... i need sleep

This right here. People love to categorize and put names on everything but in this case that's exactly the opposite of what needs to be done.

I always felt that it wasn't the people who were into 'deep' stuff that segregated themselves off. Big nights became absolutely saturated with coki-a-like metallic wobble tunes, boring sets, dozens of reloads etc. I never had anything against that wobble style in of itself before it became the overwhelming sound at any dubstep night I went to.

Nowadays I don't even go to dubstep nights. I just chew Werthers Originals, close my eyes and imagine I'm back at DMZ in 2006, then spit a Werthers Original onto my hand and start wanking vigorously until the sticky amber paste forms a sort of glue between my hand and my penis and the blood vessels begin popping one by one in the blotchy skin and I begin to bleed to death. Unfortunately so far I've only managed to bleed about three tea spoons. It would appear that this is an arduous and inefficient way of topping myself, but it also passes the time.
