how epic would a Sun Ra and Fly Lo collab be if the old fella was still with us?

given that he's got miguel atwood ferguson on violin for live shows a la..
I can imagine a live DVD for 2011 via same route as dilla timeless suite (vtech/mochilla)
followed by a next album of something more coherent.

i really like the jazz side to it but i dunno. i know what he's capable of and it just seems like he hasn't quite left the ideas enough time to mesh. its brilliant, don't get me wrong, but i think if he'd have taken it a bit slower and given himself a bit more time to grow as a musician, he could have done something very memorable.
i sound harsh but i just think that he had the potential to do the album of the year and it probably won;t be in my top 5, even though he'smy favourite producer. plus yeah, the sound quality is balls. noise and distortion are one thing, the album just has bad sound quality, like he's been using the wrong microphones to record samples.

favourite track by far.
I think it was a good attempt, but not nearly a good enough follow through from L.A.

its obvious that he did both LA and this album with "concepts" in mind. about LA he said he wanted to make some futuristic dystopia soundtrack
imo this album was originally named a Cosmic Drama or something of the sort, like the would be title track, but was too cheezy so they got in there and drugged up the name
so his next album will probably be completely different once again, or a hopeless attempt to remake LA
but i sure do like this album.

OK, I've been listening to it over and over again for awhile now and I really think this is one of the most profoundly beautiful albums I have heard in many many years in any genre!!
I want to listen to it everywhere I go (and lord knows I've tried)...
But, in my opinion, it is introspective music at its heart. It is warm and fuzzy and sounds absolutely sanfrantastic on headphones...
However, due to the fuzzy / "lo-fi" / am-radio (or whatever you'd like to call it) mix aesthetic, it does not sound as good cranked up out of a booming system.
Most bass / hiphop / dance music sounds great on my car stereo while I'm driving (powerful, crisp, clear mixdowns) but the fuzziness of this album gets drowned out by mid-range road / wind noise when I am driving. As such, it doesn't translate as well as most hiphop or dance music to that environment. For example, the buzzy FM bassline on "Do The Astral Plane" totally disappears...
So the album is not mixed to be crystal clear... That's not the intention, I gather...
That said, the mix aesthetic totally suits / complements / enhances the MOOD of the songs. It's part of the charm, much like Boards of Canada or Portishead's second album. "The medium is the message", so to speak.
This is less club or hiphop music than "Los Angeles" was. This is something else...
This music seems personal and introspective to me... Personally, I wouldn't want a crystal clear mix to crank through a booming system, not for this type of music anyway...
Well, that's my two cents...

still need to give it more listens but i really prefer FlyLo with the head-bopping beat-sitting style of, say, Rickshaw and the L.A. vibe. It's good to hear a departure from L.A. but I wish he would just smash the beat a little more often since he's so capable of it. I guess he's letting that Coltrane side shine through a bit more.

I think it's a really good album, so much props to the man for making it and daring to do his own thing when a lot of people expected something a bit different. Having said that, I don't understand people labeling this 'next level' shit and such, and I don't think it's particularly 'spaced out' or whatever. 'Los Angeles' was a far more 'spaced out' album, in my opinion.

He had to go left really, think of how many people came out after the last record attempting his style (and badly in most cases). L.A. was so distinctively sounding that once people had discovered it's formula and techniques and was documented all over the net on how to achieve that sound it was like attack of the clones so if he was to make another record like L.A. it would not of had the same impact and probably sounded like a parody of itself. I think he did the right thing with this record.

Good point. There's a reason that sound became instantly iconic though. And FlyLo still does it better than the rest. I hope he still makes some more serious jams at some point.

+1.
But I think Only Mountain has too much in common with some of Take's older work to say it's really similar to LA, it's just mixed and mastered a bit more like LA.
