Mac vs. PC

When I built my pc about a year ago, I saw a 1/4 ratio. For what I could build with $1000, would cost me equivalently $4,000 for the mac. There is no hype or exaggeration there. In fact, I thought that price was so high, I went through and selected all the highest end options for the mac, think it came to $25k

If you were comparing to the Mac Pro, that's definitely possible. It's always been ridiculously overpriced and over the past year, the iMac has gotten better and cheaper than it. The $25k is probably because Apple charges insane amounts for RAM and they let you order crazy shit like dual 30" monitors and 4 2TB hard drives. I guess it only takes a few idiots to click everything for them to turn a huge profit.

Whenever I see people bragging about how much cheaper building a custom PC is than buying a mac, I'm always inspired to look up the price difference. Here's what I've found:
To match a high end $2,000 27" iMac, it costs at least $1300 to buy the processor, motherboard, memory, video card, HD, case, power supply, and DVD burner from Newegg. Add on the cost for the fan, wireless mouse and keyboard, webcam, Windows OS, PCI cards for wi-fi, firewire, etc, and shipping for everything, and I think the cost gets pretty close.


Interestingly enough, a similarly spec'd Alienware desktop costs more than the iMac. Just some food for thought 'cause I'm bored at 3 in the morning.

Just figured I'd mention that Alienware is also known for being extremely overpriced...so it's probably not the best comparison.

There's also a thing you need to consider here. As far as I know a lot of good VST and AU out there takes a lot of place and CPU usage during your production. Mac uses only 10% of the power of the CPU to run the Mac program and PC uses nearly 30 to 40% of his CPU to run windows. So mac lets you use more power to do your demanding stuff.


I've bought a mac mini recently for ... 899$. 4g of ram and 2,56Ghz which is pretty nice. Also 4g of ram on a Mac equals nearly the double of ram in a PC so 4g of ram on a mac = 6 to 8G of ram for pc.Plus you don't have to worry about virus which is a big up also. So I'm totally mac. Running Logic and rewiring Reason in it works great and I have multiple extremely demanding VST and never crashes or making glitches while playback.

I haven't heard such tripe in a while, this is exactly the sort of thing that pretentious mac owners spout, even though they know fuck all about what they are talking about.



3% CPU usage. Windows XP, winamp playing a FLAC, several tabs open on firefox, Steam running, anti-virus running.


My CPU is FIVE YEARS OLD.

You also have no idea what RAM is.

In the end, Macs = shiny PCs that are overpriced and for the minority who have not been using windows for say, the past thirty years or indeed for their whole life, are actually counter intuitive and annoying. Like how, when you click onto another application, the actual window for the application you were just on disappears and when you go back to it you have to go to the "Window" tab at the top. Pisstake.

I have been using windows since it came out, indeed all my life, and once I switched to mac I never looked back. Yeah there is a bit of a learning curve, but it small as fuck. Now I find PC's are annoying and they have the close/maximize buttons on the wrong side. I love the one button mouse on my macbook and how if I need to right click I just put 2 fingers on the trackpad and click, I love the way I can scroll dragging two fingers on the trackpad. Just because you dont like or dont want to learn how to use a mac doesent mean there shit.
Macs = shiny PC's that have a good OS, and just work as expected. PC's are for people who cant afford, or simply don't like macs. Big fuckin deal.
There is a reason macs are standard for the music industry, just like PC's are the industry standard for business and gaming.

I personally own a Mac and I must say the setup is fairly simple. It's not going to be hard to adjust to. However I am building a PC soon for production reasons. Mainly being my Mac is about 4-5 years old and doesn't quite have the CPU power I need. Another reason I'm getting a PC is for gaming. So it just makes sense in my case. However don't be scarred of Mac, they make a hell of a product and are extremely stable. My almost never gives me trouble of any kind. Hope this helps

like last night i needed a serial ata cable
on newegg would have been 15 or like 20 bucks after shipping

What company you work for/what languages does the firm depend on most? If vis. basic is anywhere in there, or Java, I can tell you why you guys run windows.

For network administration and for more cross applicable languages, Linux is the way to go.
