+1 for Coltrane, FlyLo, and Saul Williams (it's so damn hard to find someone who makes REAL, HEARTFELT, hip-hop/rap these days. He's a very socially conscious and politically inclined dude, makes you want to get off your ass and fight the man)

Kid A by Radiohead never ceases to inspire me. Everything about it is thought provoking. The sound design and production leaves me scratching my head, the lyrics and vocal melodies are so haunting they really hit home with me. I guess I should include Amnesiac too since they were born out of the same studio session, just released separately.

I know a lot of people have a 'vision' before they start a song off, but sometimes for me the most inspiring thing can be to open up my DAW, flip through some instrument presets or grab my guitar, insert random drum loop, and dick around until I find a melody I can run with. Works for any genre. :santasmurf:

p.s. totally digging the new smilies. LOVE the smurfs

Mobster movies influence the fuck out of my music.
A conglomeration of my old tearout tunes I like, and my new ones I don't

A lot of trance funnily enough for stuff like arped melodies, pads and strings. Garage will always influence me. No artists in particular I can think of. Someone mentioned Radiohead before and "In Rainbows" is could for some inspiration.

what makes me cringe sometimes is people who have good taste in edm but generally poor taste in other music. it's kinda disappointing in a way, not like i was meant to give a shit about anyones music taste or such but in some mysterious way it still disturbs a bit.

call me silly but i like to think there is a certain evolution of music taste. don't try to push me that "each to their own"-bullshit when i consider a miles davis fan musically more intelligent than somebody who (still) likes papa roach. after passionately listening to music for so long and going through different (some embarrasing) phases of music enthusiasm i'd consider myself, not trying to sound like a gay snob, somewhat of a connoisseur.

back on topic

i draw influence on soul and classic 70's prog rock. still wish i could somehow, in a genious groundbreaking way, fuse king crimson and bass music together.

The XX, crystallised and basic space being my favourite tunes of theirs, A couples of songs of Deadmau5es new album, arrogant nobcheese that he is, The drums for when im in a good mood and a bit of benga for my dubstep influence. Also Cookie Monsta, the midrange that guy does is amazing, despite his drums being shite.

Might be a bit odd but I get some influence from House music.

eg. Mr.Oizo - Flatbeat Shaft - Mucho Mambo ( sway me more ) and so on.

Not considered using movies as of yet, don't think I will.

Roy Ayers, Rien Ne Va Plus, Idris Muhammed, Tom Scott... favorite funk artists... Funks aweosme, lets me stop dwelling on production and get to the root of it all.

Siouxsie Sioux... original queen of D.A.T.

Teebs, Flying Lotus, Mujava, Matthew David, Dungen, Kutmah, Bambaataa, old Invisible Scratch Pickles... dynamix II... electronica/tape ops...

IDK whypeople have to specify 'non-dubstep' youd really think thatd be a given... then again, I dont know why people are here trying to write 'dubstep' either so.

Lately its been a lot of indie rock, metalcore/hardcore, and new screamo.

One band thats been on constant rotation lately for me is La Dispute. If you like At The Drive-in, you will probably dig this. Here is a 12-minute epic track from their last LP. Absolutely incredible. This inspires me....

Even though I don't really like classical music - I love the instruments. A lot of my inspiration comes from classical or foreign (asian, middle eastern) instruments, simply because they have a sound that I don't hear often, so I usually find them quite stunning to listen to. I then try and emulate that in a synth (whether it's close or not is irrelevant, it's the emotion I'm trying to emulate, not the sound).

70s horror movies.
old grime instrumentals
doom, sludge, stoner metal and black metal
hip hop
prog rock
grimy and dark synth based ambient cassettes (think Spine Scavenger's The Raider and Envenomist's Sixth and Seven Key on Hanson for a general idea)
