This thread is fantastic.

As a fan of fine American rap circa 79-10 (though there's less and less of it) I find that Grime is at its best when it's furthest away from American rap. The more it immitates US choruses, beats and general style, the more in comes off as subpar Hip-Hop but the further away it goes into post-Garage beats, crazy intense hype raps and unique London-centric styles and concepts the more it shines as a unique genre of its own.

Off topic, but don't you hate it when US emcees rhyme to dubstep beats like they were 70BPM southern rap tracks? It's embarasing to see UK cats spit circles around em'.

140bpm'ish
spitting different lyrics over different beats in a live environment (radio/ dance) - unlike US wap where it's mainly set lyrics to set beats
rewinds for lyrics

not really about spitting fast when you look at mc's like Giggs who do grime and spit half time

to be completely honest with you, man, I prefer my Grime the same way I prefer my Hip Hop & Dubstep - with no vocals at all! All about the beats for me, my friend

on a side note, yes, i do hate it when people spit on dubstep like it's hip hop, but do you really think one of these cats could outspit Nas, Iron Solomon, Immortal Technique, KRS-1, Supernatural, Big L, etc?

I don't...

i mean, no disrespect, but in terms of lyrical fire, the states have been holding it down for quite some time

back on topic though, grime is the shit! big up Ellijah and Skilliam and Butterz, without ya'll I don't know where I'd get my daily dose!

didn't see force1 already posted that Devlin/Dogzilla freestyle...apologies, but that shit is sick. exemplary freestyle.

MCs don't really exist in that capacity in the United States anymore. i've spent time going to the underground clubs, seeing who's up and coming in Atlanta + NYC. it's all just really boring to me.

Yup, love a lot of recent instrumental Grime as well. Ellijah and Skilliam's Rinse show is required listening.

Nas, KRS and Big L at their best? Nah, but Nas and KRS today are grumpy old men, shadows of their former selves. Don't get me wrong, The US owns emceeing the same way the London owns every genre of music descended from Hardcore...but their best days are long past.
