I can understand not tokin' while make tunes, but a producer that ain't never done drugs? that's not right man - 75% of the people listenin' to your tunes are gonna be on drugs - dont ya feel like getting stink bombed and seeing what your tunes feel like form their perspective? ain't smoked any of the good stuff since I came back from uni in may and Ive been way more productive though - still man Im itchin' for a bit green so I can hear what my tunes sound like when I'm cained!!
but wait, if people are saying they enjoy music better and everything SOUNDS better when baked or whatever, you wouldnt be getting a real perspective on your songs?... be like wearing the good old beer goggles when youre out.
but as ive said before, if you gotta light up and smoke or whatever shit you wanna do, go for it! if you feel it benefits your productions, then do what you gotta do. but, for me, i can quite happily sit and produce music sober as a judge AND enjoy it

I quit smoking during the day so when Im producing in the day Im sober but at night I like to toke, I like making tracks high and not-high you get a different feel for the tune and stuff. Sometimes ill just keep going on a tune till i get stuck or bored then toke up and get back to the tune and I get more ideas and it seems to start to flow good again.

Anything sounds good when your stoned so I don't make tracks when I'm high for that reason. There's nothing worse than waking up excited about listening to that awesome track you were making the night before stoned. Only to listen to it sober and think wtf is this shite?!

quit with the cheap ass indicas. Get that purebred sativa and clear your schedule for the next 12 hours.
This.
I got a connect on this trainwreck that's been cured to perfection... OOHWEE shit just lifts me up man. Great for reviewing a track and figuring out what kind of direction i want to tweak it in.

From listening to soundclouds, most people who don't toke seem to be making mellow stuff and the people who don't make more dancier bits.
It don't make sense.

Well, it simpleton terms.( yes, I am calling you a simpleton)
You'd expect those who get high to be making mellow tunes and those who don't to be making dancier/hypey tunes.

dude.. not really.. i've been smoking for a bit now in one of the stoner capitols of the world.. and the stereotype of it making one lazy and mellow just isn't always true. it can do that.. it can also make you energetic.. honestly once you've smoked a certain amount you'll find that it doesn't fundamentally change what you do or how you think about things. it allows one to find within oneself what was lacking..

Thats cause what you buy is legally grown and perfectly harvested.
You're getting the top-o-top gear, while most of us were/are smoking shit with fibreglass embeded in it of either dry or very shit crops.
Of course you're going to get satisfactory highs haha.

helps near the final stages of the track. it's nice for getting a different perspective of the tune after having heard it all for so long
but like someone said in the production tips thread, be careful or you're gonna end up EQing a snare for six hours

hakka wrote:You find it easier to make tunes after a nice smoke? I havent smoked anything now for 2 weeks, can just about cope with 10 minutes on a tune then i get stressed and feel like i have no creativity. Not a good thing, need to break the mould! I do enjoy a nice smoke though, just wanted to have a go without. Thoughts / Experience?
i do find being high is a good headspace for getting creative and letting your mind wander while making a tune. i also can sit and work for a looong time when im high so i guess it works for me. i do think its a good idea to work sober as well, to try and get a different vibe or perspective on your music i suppose.

He was pointing out the fact that you said "people who don't" twice.

I used to smoke pretty solidly for 6 years or so - although contrary to all the people who say they smoke to find that extra bit of creativity or whatever, I did it for the exact opposite reason. I used to smoke to block out creativity - to get tunnel vision and do all the stuff I never had the patience for while sober. My whole angle was maximizing productivity though - so I never got baked or even that high really. Just a light sprinkle in my cigarettes throughout the day to keep myself "letterboxed".
I stopped completely about 4 years ago - and it hasn't made any difference in the quality, creativity or otherwise for my tracks... to be honest, I found quiting tobacco much harder. The only issue with timing and productivity is now having a wife & kids, so I have had to alter my production schedule, but that is life.

Most stoney statement of the thread award goes to:

One more thing...
I've found that if you don't have your fundamentals down, smoking can totally fuck you up. But if you've got your shit straight, your workflow totally worked out, and you know your equipment, when you smoke, and that flow comes, you can go with it, you don't get caught up in the mechanics of resampling something, or creating a drum kit from a record you just sampled or whatever, you just go go go. One of the scenarios I feel, honestly, weed can take you to heights you wouldn't normally get to totally sober. With that said, of course weed is extremely dangerous, and this is in no way an endorsement.

about 4 days ago i blazed for the first time in about 3 weeks. which is really long for me as i am used to smoking from the time i wake up and staying high untill i sleep. anyway what i noticed is , after i smoked i was able to sit at my computer , start a tune from scratch and literally work on it for like 5+ solid hours before i take a look around and remember where the fuck i am and what time it is. during the 3 weeks of staying sober i was not able to work on a track for longer then 30 minutes before getting bored or frustrated with not being able to come up with anything creative.but the second i blazed i was so amazed at how i was so intricate on every little detail of the tune i was able to fine tune to get it sounding just perfect. i was also amazed at how i knew exactly what to do as if it was second nature. there was no pausing to think "should i do this?" it was just idea after idea , absolutely incredible workflow. this probly due to my relationship with weed and not the weed itself but still it was pretty cool. also the next day when i was sober and listened to the track i was amazed by it
