Great producer doing something different with the sound imo.
I am glad he is making music

not really overrated
it's just his name gets brought up so much cuz he is one of the main heads pushing this sound forward imo
more people need to step up and take the pressure of this man!
all his releases from know on are going to be critique'd like he's a fucking 4 star chef!

One of very few people actually pushing the sound forward, real talk.
His use of his own voice (in an interesting way) and the fact that he is ignoring traditional 'song' structure is in my books a very large plus point.
He is attracting ears from outside of what is becoming a stagnated scene.
Glad to have the guy on-board, hope he sticks around for longer than 90% of the new 'talent' that has emerged from certain sectors of the scene.

I hate the Trim tune.
See I love that tune. It's a proper weird out which really appeals. It sounds quite epic I reckon. I'd love for this to get a release.

id agree with this except for the traditional song structure bit, he is pretty much adhering to 'intro - pre-chorus - refrain - bridge' variations.. but he is eschewing a template from which a whole host of dubstep is based on, when considered by song structure its pretty damn cookie cutter.
this song goes so many damn places its silly.. absolutely love it.
i think we should be asking,
is James Blake overhated.

Don't even listen to his tunes as dubstep...
tbh they're structured far better than many many "dubstep" tracks.
If you can't "get" the groove of them, you might want to reconsider your sense of rhythm.
It's not boring club music. Get over it.

i think the 15 pages on dissensus already figured this out.
"over-rated" doesn't really exist. (unless we're talking about lil wayne or drake or kanye west, etc ; )
if enough people rate something for someone to believe it is "over-rated," it essentially can't be inherently.
it also implies that those that "rate" are "rating" for some other reason, i.e. from hype and not because it's any good, which is fairly insulting and insinuating.
Kani, nailed this one.
OVER HATED.
(fwiw i think he's hit or miss....kinda like Mount Kimbie. i just gotta be in the right mood to listen. but I like his pallete.)

heard him say once in an interview that he's ok with being labeled as a dubstep artist. at least there's a few left that remember that to be strange and odd are at the heart of dubstep, not the fringes. it's so sad that people think they need to distance themselves from the name. Dubstep once meant bass and whatever you want, glad he remembers that time...

I think he makes amazing Dubstep. They're chilled and intricate when listening at home, and fuck up your ear drums when played on a system...that's what this music is about innit?
Obviously it aint gonna everyones cuppa, but his harmonies, beat patterns and song structures (to me) are pretty individual...
