Maybe we even deserved it. I don't believe there's a god that made us, but when you think about it, we got given a lot of power by evolution/god/whatever you believe in, and in general, we're abusing it constantly.
You can always do your part and finish yourself off :t:

Think about world debt, conditions attached to the loans of the IMF (i.e. requiring cuts in government spending), the high rate of exploitation, subsidizing particular crops so farmers in the third world can't compete on the world market. It's not particularly controversial to acknowledge this, I don't think.[/quote]

I'm really just asking. I don't understand Africa in the slightest. Wasn't there famine in Africa before the imf, and western domestic crop subsidies?

I imagine things were worse before when it was divided into your run of the mill old fashioned colonies. Of course famines are common in underdeveloped nations but the point is Africa is a country that is stunted and unable to develop as long as the status quo is maintained. The fact that famine still happens anywhere, considering the technology and productive forces at our disposal I think is criminal. (Wasn't having a go btw)

you have no idea.....

Those Belgians used to be pretty goddamn nasty:

In the absence of a census (the first was taken in 1924) to provide an opening figure,[13] it is even more difficult to quantify the population loss of the period. Despite this, Forbath claimed it was at least 5 million[14]; Adam Hochschild, and Isidore Ndaywel è Nziem, 10 million;[15][16] the Encyclopædia Britannica[citation needed] and Fredric Wertham's 1966 book "A Sign For Cain: An Exploration of Human Violence"[17] estimate that the population of the Congo dropped from 30 million to 8 and 8.5 million, respectively, in that period. This estimate has gained currency with some journalists. An example is The New York Times reporting that that "Under the reign of terror instituted by King Leopold II of Belgium (who ran the Congo Free State as his personal fief from 1885 to 1908), the population of the Congo was reduced by half—as many as 8 million Africans."[18]

Ah yeah that's horrible... Heart of Darkness really opened my eyes to that. I really like that book. Was shocked when I found out what a racist and elitist Conrad actually was.
