well maybe I'll give it a try when I have time to do that that I don't want to be programming the rest of a beat, if you think it's worth it.
I just get the feeling it'd take a long time to get good enough at that for me to be able to do it quickly enough for it not to get in the way, but I'll give it a crack.

I am kinda surprised that every person having a go has NEVER used a sample pack as a start point for a sound or altered a synth pre-set to make their lives easier though.

I bet 99.9% of people work exclusively out of sample packs for there drums...

Even for someone just starting out it takes 5 minutes to do a EQ sweep taking out 500hz and everything below it.. If you're that stretched for time, maybe making music isn't for you?

Dont get me wrong, i very rarely synth my hats, just occasionally. And from my experience, most sample packs are full of dull sounding hats with the odd nice one thrown in every 20 samples or so.

But theres ways of getting the most out of them, correct filtering, layering, EQ, also check your amp envelope settings in your chosen sampler. I always like to reduce the release setting to zero, give a little bit of attack on some hats and shorten the delay/sustain aswell. Little things like that go a long way.

But defo try layering hats to create new ones.

surely that's like a bit like saying if you're not going to play for Barcelona, why kick a football?

this is my experience too, hence the thread.

also speeding/pitching up really dull hihat samples by 5 semitones to an octave can actually dramatically improve them

but generally vengeance, a good 808 hihat, or a cut from a good spacious break i find is the best

I agree that synthesis is the way to go. It's very easy to do as well. Also, record your own sounds and mess with them in a sampler by playing with the envelopes.

Bit harsh there fellas... not like he asked for crasked wares or malas sample collection is it.

The arty stuff i looked at is just a torrent of the drum samples from the vengeance stuff...

I believe there is a drum pack on DOA by EN1783 or something? Has some sweet closed and open hat samples in it, search there.
