i'm not saying layered snares isn't right sometimes, but as a technique i think it's definitely overrated and i would rather spend the time to find one sample that kills it than trying to put together a few.

true, so the layering bit is done already. like i said it does depend. although i've been getting much more into acoustic snares so it is just one thing.

I sort of like claps instead of snares but only on ambient tracks, you'd have to really pull of something special to have a clap on a harder track.

it's really a matter of what you're trying to achieve -- something that expresses what is within, or something that everyone already likes.. both have validity..
