it means one company controls all aspects of you as an artist
they choose own your releases
they're your publicist
they're your booking agent
etc
basically the own you completely as an artist

They also receive a percentage from 5-25% from what you earn at shows, anything you publish (though not many of us write books), DVDs, or any other merchandise you sell to promote yourself. Traditionally these were sources of income that the labels didn't touch. Since they've been so uncreative in selling records since Napster, they try to pay for their beamers by stealing your coin. When you include the percentages from a publicist, booking agent, manager, attourney, you'll be lucky to walk away with 30% of the take, and this is before they shaft you on royalties. If you were a big/established artist you'd have some leverage to negotiate a better cut, but based on the vagueness of the post and the desire for unsigned artists to send stuff in a cattle call type of thread, should raise a red flag for everyone to think twice about getting involved in something like this.

I think you might be on to something son. Foul Play is actually the only label I can think of that give out 360 deals. Trust me you guys do not want to do business with that guy.

depends on the contract, but aliases have been used in the past when people have an exclusive deal to release material on other labels or material the controlling label didn't approve for themselves
kinda a loophole
if you want a sort of interesting take at a bigger scale read up on what happened with 30 seconds to mars breaking their deal (though it's all been sorted now) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/30_seconds ... .282008.29

cheers man... a lot of it with us is our transparency and what our overall goal is.

I know I counteract a lot of our good will with my mouth running, but I'd like to think when it comes down to the meat and potatoes of running a label we go above and beyond what is expected of a label.

You defo want to sign as the alias. I actually talked to a kid that signed a 360 with Foul Play and ended up just changing his name. Fuck it but really you don't want that unless Tempa or Ninja Tune, etc is the one calling and they won't be calling...

I wrote up a bit a while back on the production forum about exclusive deals and how they really make little sense for most artists.

we have culprate exclusive to dubsaw but I literally gave him the sweetheart deal of the century and take no personal money from him.

culprate can pay me when he's wildly successful a few years from now... i have faith that if I enable him as an artist now it will end up being worth it in the end for both of us.

theres no sense in nickle and diming artists with exclusive contracts... a label should only be making you an exclusive if they think you are a one of a kind artist

Ole' a-beezy up there is another good examp[le  , get him hyped up after a game, few drinks in him, hell be pretty blunt. Runs his shit well, even if. It stands out, when people are honest. You guys came to mind because thats what I remember from your label post... you listed styles you wanted, mastering services, distro, general rates and idea about promo. If remember, the only Savory and Tentative posts Iv seen have been the same.

to those reading this, consider guys that when there coming here begging for submissions, there obviously not getting them... Pkay, abz, care to shed some light on how many demos you guys get... weekly? ... probably enough to make DSF posts a little less the priority. Much less coming here lookng for people to sign 360.

To summize this little bit of jibberish from me (and pardon, its late)... with good, honest, labels willing to share full details hanging out on the forums in abundance, theres no reason why anyone should buy into this until he gives up more info.

Dont be so desperate to sign guys. I felt that way too until the time came, and now thatIm actually starting to get things done right, Im really glad I stepped back, and waited for the right oppurtunities to come along. Ive no experience, but when the guys here who have it say to not get to deal-desperate, they're right.

because my real life job is fairly demanding i've had to limit the time i make myself available online to receive demos lately.

i used to be on aim 24.7 and got about 100-250 demos a week easily. Tonight I've been online for about maybe 3 hours? and this is what my desktop looks like

about 40ish demos?
