music should always be for the love and the fun
it's nice to have a label believe in your music, but follow the love and the fun and you'll get the recognition you deserve.

Well, I started writing dubstep in around 05... By 07 I got offered a record deal by the Label "Insect Mind" they had a amazing roster of artists including Cyrus, Hatcha, DFRNT, The Widdler.. So I was naive and was like "YES!" signed the contract and sent them wavs and the masters came back... They was all compressed to crap and sounded awful and they tried to tell me money was spent on these masters... So anyway, the release goes out and from what I know for sure, at least 40 people bought it from friends/family to support my first ever release, I only had to make 24$ to start getting paid so, I should of at least of gotten a bit of pocket change. I am still waiting to get paid, the labels disappeared and not one soul was paid who I contacted about it.
insectmind is such a joke. i almost let them release a tune back in the day to because they were a local label, thank god i could know them in person and see how wack the label was being run and did not let them have the tune(not to mention how wack of people they were aswell). the story behind that hatcha release is rediculous. go listen to the tune you can tell he knocked it up real quick....think to yourself why would hatcha release a tune on a wack label noone heard of? $$$$$$.

Never had money in mind when making music. Never will too. It's a personal thing to me.

Hence why I'm currently considering going back to education to study PR.

it is the road less traveled, and I'm not saying it's the only thing you have to do
but if you stay true to the love and the fun, chances are you will eventually be in the right place at the right time
sometimes these things take a while
all about going with the flow
being the water in the river instead of the branch sticking up out of the water
that's what I'm getting at

it's nice to think that but it just ain't true.
HOWEVER
getting to know or having friends that are making it and carrying on doing it for love will probably mean you will have your time.

I dunno in my opinion the cream rises to the top. There are cases I am sure but usually there are good reasons why someone doesn't make it. People talk about the magnitude of shit hot unsigned producers out there. I just don't see it. If I am wrong kindly break me off a soundcloud address or something. For serious.

do you mind doing a bunch of promotion work, marketing etc or would you just rather be in the studio working on tunes
that is the main advantages to labels
yeah but as artist-- even if there isn't a label promoting your works, it's still up to you to do as much promo as possible. w/ a label, you may be part of a larger strategy w/ a full-on PR campaign, radio campaign, tour support, etc... even then, you can still do MORE, and be in control of it as an artist.
of yea it's def you get what you put in regardless, just you don't have to put in as much as when you're flying solo
by no means am trying to give the impression that getting signed is some magic ticket
This is very true, I can speak with a little experience having releases on two or three good labels, it's still not an excuse to sit back not do anything. It's a game, and is all about putting in some decent groundwork and being patient.
Patience is the keyword. By all means try sending music over to labels, DJ's and the like. Also it's about everything else that goes with life in general. Work, Families etc. Also a big point is to register your released stuff with PRS.
If the product is good enough, you'll get known. It will take time though.
