i produced on one monitor for a while and it worked for me, best advise is, work on a good monitor mono and do any imaging and left and right edits in headphones. its not ideal to have one but one good monitor will serve you better than two ok ones

Some great stuff you posted man but I do have another question. Many people like to say that dubstep is a very bass heavy genre of music and that you need at least a 6" woofer on your monitors to get the low frequencies worked out. The KRK's you posted are 5". Would this suffice for producing dubstep? Would I be missing anything by not hearing the 40-50hz frequency range? Does it really make that much of a difference?

Those KRK 5's are in my price range and now I'm thinking of maybe picking some of those up.

I wouldn't get anything with less than an 8" woofer but that's me...

Think it depends on the style of music your making. I know alot of people keep there frequency's higher than that but Personally I go down to 40hz all the time. Maybe try looking at your tunes in a spectrum analyzer and see if you usually use those frequency's or not. Personally though, I would definitely want to hear down to 40;)

i know this thread is a few days old but i'm about to buy the KRK 5's and just wanted to get another opinion or two on therook's question: Will I be able to produce dubstep on the 5's or is it pretty necessary to step up to the 6's.

I produce on a pair of 5's and I do miss that low end sometimes - the lower notes of my sub drop off

However, if you just learn how your monitors sound and text your mix on other speakers where there's more low end then you'll be fine...

For your price range you will not be able to get monitors that go below 40 hz (ish) so you just need to check them against a club system, or another pair of speakers that do go that low.

And although sub is very important in dubstep, it is not the be all and end all, you will still need to learn stereo imaging, eq ing etc. that will be hard to achieve without monitors.
