I know what you used to play, I know what you used to produce, and I've seen you play out a few times. You didn't play much old grime, newer dubstep dominated. Maybe that was just the event/crowd.

I can see how there's similarities between the stuff you used to play and tear out tunes producers are making now. They are pretty tenuous though.

I can't criticise you for liking the mid range stuff because you know your shit. Unlike certain DJs in grime who claim the latest most popular filth tune also happens to be their favourite dubstep tune of the moment.

Although going from grime to Dr. P is a bit of wtf moment.

also, I think this thread shows that I don't need other people's opinions to validate my music taste. I listen to some chilled dubstep because I like it. It annoys me that whenever I want to see grime music live, I know at least 20% of the tunes on any given night are likely to be filth. That's why I don't just dislike the music itself, I dislike the entire 'movement' which seeks to monotonise music.

It might seem mental to you and a lot of others but that's how it is.

As for playing old grime in my dj sets at gigs, I pick my moments. If I played old grime at all my gigs then I'd never be playing anything new and that's not very progressive. I did a radio show 3 weeks ago with 2 hours of old grime and dubstep all off vinyl.

Again, backs up what I was saying I don't think people actually do know what I'm playing and just base their opinions on the one time they may have caught a bit of my set somewhere.

Fwd is usually a good place to hear me represent the full spectrum of my interests. Last week I played grime, dubstep, UK garage and some stuff not even 140bpm all in an hour set.

I may not be everyones cup of tea due to the fact I never champion one particular style, but at the end of the day I enjoy what I play, and that's what matters most. Like you said in your post, you don't need the opinions of people on a web forum to justify a reason for you to love UK rap music - you enjoy it because it's your passion. Same way I love every record I have ever played from anti war dub right down to junior spesh.

Also, just cos I like a lot of stuff don't mean I don't dislike a lot too.

You said about liking chipmunks new music and slew dem sets. I am not into chipmunks new music personally, but that's nothing to do with it being commercial. I got respect for magnetic man, pro green and also can appreciate a lot of pop music too.

I think people on this forum are afraid to admit they like stuff once it gains popularity.

yeah tbh you do mix styles a lot which can be positive I guess. Just means when Trim's on your show I have to hear him on 'When I Look At You' as well as 'Ice Rink'.

out of interest (well more than just a passing interest) if someone were to book you and ask you to do a purely grime set (old and new, progress is good we're told) would you be willing to do that?

the reason I like UK rap is it seems it's the only genre where when people gain popularity (relatively) they don't switch up their style.

I'd love to believe that it's a coincidence that it's at the exact moment when it looks like they might get signed that they suddenly decide they much prefer pop music to what they were making before, but I doubt it. music made purely for money is usually soulless and generic.

Yeah, so long as it's promoted that way I would happily do that. I did a history of dubstep and grime set with p money in Bristol a few months back.

Obviously if people don't state on their flyer that it's an old school grime set then it would be unfair to punters who paid to hear upfront dubs.

As for trim on radio, a lot of the dubstep I play when he is there is played cos he and the other mcs are begging me to drop it! They all want to spit over sweet shop and when I look at you in particular. They also love purple city by joker.

yeah I reckon it's cos it's an easy way to build hype/get a reload without necessarily being a sick mc or dropping the right bar at the right time but maybe I'm too cynical.

i think its more that the context of the flux pavillion style tunes are a corruption of the latter

physically they are two completely different styles of music, and i dont see why people should be stuck to listening to one type
