Got to say I disagree with you Andy. I think the live performance is on the way out with visuals being the future. Anyone with a PC or Mac can create videos these days and as long as it's done well would give a far better visual emphasis than some sweaty blokes on a stage!
As for the improvised element this could be done with any real-time processing tool (MAX/MSP, Ableton etc..) although these days I question the worth of improvising stuff live when it can be perfected in the studio.
using live instruments slashes the potential range of sounds available to you. Even using a synth is limiting when you could have a package like reaktor to mimic any synth and create new ones as well. No disrespect to live musicians (i play guitar and cornet) but why use one sound when you could have an infinite number?

LOL @ live performances on the way out. Haven't you noticed who sells the most records these days? The Arctic Monkeys! Dance music does fuck all.

if people really enjoy listening to MySpace compression on songs....then they obviously aren't that into the music. This has come up before when bands were putting a stream of their whole record before it came out up there and people would rip it and even add track markers.
it's always exciting to hear something new that you enjoy...but the sound of MySpace is crap.

ha ha yeah well up for adding my cornet wizardry. Maybe some freeform jazz over the top...or some brass band arrangement???
I haven't seen Laibach...would be interested. Got to say that electronic music can translate well to the stage. Lo Fidelity Allstars were incredible at the Reading Alleycat years ago and basement jaxx have been impressive recently. I just think it is more a novelty than a superior way of getting music across. Maybe that's just me getting old and still nursing the wounds i got from over zealous moshing!!!
