FL studio is ok. It is like $200 though. Many people find it confusing and hard to use. I wouldn't say it is the best though. High price doesn't mean it is the best though.

The software that works for me is DUBturbo. It comes with instructional video tutorials, beats and sounds, virtual musical instruments, and updates. Way cheaper and more fun.

Pro tools is the dogs bollocks, but it's a hardware/software package you haven't got a hope in hell of affording.
If you think you might want to go the hardware route in the future I think Reason could teach you the most as it's emulating hardware, patch cables and all.

My 2 cents:
FL Studio: I find the interface crippling and the workflow is horrible, I have a problem being creative in FL. BUT... i think that it comes with good plugins(the granulizer, harmor, the effects etc.), especially the newer versions.
Ableton Live: Personal favourite. Best workflow compared to any other DAW imo. Very creative solutions and layout. I think that this is easier than FL Studio and it feels 100 times more professional.
Logic Pro: Industry standard. Top notch editing, both audio and midi. The effects and plugins that comes with Logic sound so professional that you will shit your pants. Harder to learn. The downside is that this is for Mac only... :/
Pro Tools: Also idustry standard. Someone said Cubase is industry standard but that's not true the higher up you go in the industry(maybe he's talking about the dubstep industry, i dunno). I have friends that work as writers for Warner, and they say there's only really two choices here... and that's Logic and Pro Tools. Logic is better when you are working with midi, and Pro Tools is superior when working with audio. Like someone said before, it's a software/hardware package. Would never recommend Pro Tools to anyone who doesn't know how to produce and who work mainly with midi...

i'd say throw out some of the plugins that have overcomplicated UI's as its only gonna turn people off.
for example the atlantis stuff, oatmeal or short circuit will probably leave a lot of people confused rather than excited.
synths could be tal noisemaker and u-he tyrell, for fx keep the kjaerhus classics and the cmt bitcrusher as well as glitch. add audio damage rough rider and camelcrusher, voxengo SPAN is a must, the gvst stuff can be kept as well.

Who ever said cubase is industry standard is wrong... I know a few people who work in different studios and they all use pro tools, one sometimes uses nuendo though which is like fancy cubase.

Have only recorded drums in Pro Tools, and before I started to make dubstep I worked in Logic.

I cant wait to try my hand at logic next year, all i hear is good things.

Yeah! Pro Tools have better audio functions and stuff, but Logic is THE SHIT! Almost as good as Pro Tools audio wise, but a 1000x better than Pro Tools midi wise... go for it! Best DAW ever together with Ableton.

)Andythetwig's guide is still relevant imo except in one respect, Pro Tools is now well within the reach of the common man. It's also shaped up to be a proper do it all DAW, rather than the strongly audio oriented editing suite of yore.

Well... what's the best is quite personal.
How does the shoe fit? How does the shoe look? Does it have laces or velcro? Can you pump them up or ar they flat?
If you wanna run in the forest, you don't choose Vans.(even though you can) Some shoes are made for doing stuff that other shoes can't. Climbing shoes, boots, running shoes, sneakers etc... you can use them all, but some of them are more specialized than others!
