Re: Hating Muslims is socially acceptable
This is true in my experience too. My best friend was born in Pakistan and is a Muslim but has lived here for over 20 years now. He's not quite withdrawn into his community but is inherently paranoid about BNP/NF members beating him up wherever he goes due to the aforementioned rags and scare stories heard from other Muslims. Even then, the stories are always about his brothers-badminton partners-cousins-wifes-friends-friend, or something of the like. He himself has not been racially abused (verbally or otherwise) since we were at school in the 90's when, IMO, it was a lot more socially acceptable to hate Muslims.nicenice wrote:Problem is, from what I've seen, Muslims only see what other people think of them through newspapers such as the sun & the daily mail which are mildly racist and damning towards them. They never see what people actually think, which is mostly, they don't care. This causes them to become paranoid and withdrawn into their community.
Top bloke but after 10 years of questions like "i'm planning a trip to Bristol, do you think i'll get stabbed by NF? Is it a racist area?", it gets a bit much.
As far as the question "Is hating Muslims socially acceptable?", I would say not. There are still a lot of people (myself included) that had grandparents that fought/lived through the second world war and so have been brought up to believe that to discriminate on grounds of race/religion/creed etc. is WRONG. Perhaps many think it is acceptable, but not the majority.

Re: Hating Muslims is socially acceptable
It's definitely true in America. Just look at the kind of bile people like Glenn Beck spew forth.
If he said the kind of shit he does about muslims about Jews instead, he'd likely lose his show.
...which is not to say that he likely WOULDN'T spew forth his vitriol about Jews if he could, because he most definitely would.

in times of recession and unpopular government, media & people always start bashing minorities.
it doesnt matter which ones as long as they dont have much of a voice to fight back and they draw the attention away from the inadequacies of the current power.

Re: Hating Muslims is socially acceptable
I don't think hating any type of person is acceptable on any grounds.
Hating individuals because they're stnuc is though.

vulvavibration wrote:sorry mate - but before shouting out 'integration' you should understand how immigration works.mr hyde wrote:I love London and think that is largely because of the diversity and all that it brings with music, clubs, food, shops etc.
But diversity needs integration and people actually wanting to be British. My friend is a Primary school teacher in a 90% muslim school. The parents that turn up in Burkas are generally the ones that have a child every year and after 6 years some still need their children to translate for them at parents evening, no effort at all to integrate into the wider community. One parent has had 3 children all named after famous recent Muslim terrorists! (one or possibly 2 could be coincidence but 3?!?). If there is someone 'not that muslim' then sadly it generally means that they are more involved in the wider community of being what is traditionally British. ....and it bothers me in any religious community that doesn't want to integrate.
"And in the road, as a woman walks past wearing a burka, the passers-by think: 'That woman's either oppressed or is making a political statement'." ...I would think that myself, the Quran doesn't directly say to wear one and they weren't even that common in the middle east until last century, royalty using religious power in Arab states as the oil $$ came in.
let's start with urban planning. it has always been the case that immigrants move to the cheapest possible places (obviously bcause they are poor) - allright - that leads to a strong segregation. -> this leads to homogenous religious or cultural communities -> leads to a polarisation of the whole society.
integration starts, imho with urban planning!
if you have an urban region that is heterogenious there won't be problems and integration will happen on it's own.
hope you understand my point, my english is quite weak...
Good points, but there is one missing factor in all this, and it's the ''White Flight'' phenomena..
Throughout history, in the US and parts of the UK, once a minority moves into the community, the majority (white people) move out, further leading to the polarization of their culture and society.

Re: Hating Muslims is socially acceptable
once everyone born in this country passes basic english+maths tests then you can start bitching about people coming over here and not learning the language.
Re: Hating Muslims is socially acceptable
The problem is people talking about it.
Re: Hating Muslims is socially acceptable
it's been socially acceptable to make fun of christians for decades

i do see where you're comin fromnicenice wrote:The problem is people talking about it.
i've made similar points in threads like this in the past
obviously you're thinking that 'if people stopped yabberin about it and just got on with their own shit' it'd be much simpler
loadsa valid arguments made in this thread so far, White Flight being a case-in-point.
where i live in Manchester is essentially a massive council estate, people being relocated post-war, majority white families. they all stick together... if integration is going to work its completely pointless having the white community standing back saying ''well we were here first so prove to us that we should accept you'' - it needs active involvement on both parts to either keep it civil/evolve as a homogenous unit
you're never gona have everyone holding hands dancing in the streets together but i think people need to get over this idea that immigrants are stupid, ignorant and closed off. the reason some of them dont speak english is cos they haven't been here long enough to have learned it well enough! add to that the fact the majority DO actually speak english very well, what you see is media, generated hyperboly.
'Muslim immigration' is only the latest in the line of immigrants who've come over and joined our society. im 1st Generation, i have a lot of friends who are 1st Generation. dont doubt that the children of a lot of these immigrants who 'fail to integrate' will naturally do so - not only will they naturally do so they'll for the most part WANT to.
thats the generation to care about, and once they're grown up it'll be rocky but it'll also be the norm.
i give it 40-50 years before we have a muslim culture ingrained in our society like we do west indian and asian.
flavour of the month.
and FUCK hegemony.

That was oddly gripping. Needs finishing.
Hm. Once nearly ended up bunking college with a Muslim girl to go to an museum.
We were in the same class, but this was the first time we'd spoke, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't amazing. She was gorgeous.
Too bad she backed out at the last minute.

bringing it in this context is less than appropriate... open a ''i hate that guy'' thread - but not in a thread about a muslim-debate.
