i would personally like to complain about the speedyness of current releases as it is getting increasingly difficult to stay on top of them all and afford all the records i want.

the "DIY release on whitelabel" route is not a walk in the park. cutting and pressing is one thing, but who's going to get your whitelabel into the stores quickly? no one's going to do you any favors.
it's all about relationships. distro companies like working with business minded people that have a general goal in mind. sure they want to move units, but they also want to build brands. the distro and label system works best because they help each other in the long term. they build and grow together.
producer x, that walks in the door with 1000 white labels that he's cut and pressed himself is not going to be on anyone's distro priority list. they've got no idea if you'll continue the relationship with their company, so you'll be treated exactly like someone that's just walked in the door. obviously, if you've got some massive hit tune on your hands it's going to make a big difference, but that's a very rare case these days.
the dubplate system works because it supports relationships and family minded business structure. you help them, they help you.
