I think there would be a lot less illegal downloads if mp3s were priced reasonably , 1.99 for a mp3 is crazy , if mp3s were 25-50p each there would be a lot more people prepared to pay for music.

CD's should be a £10 imo, and no more unless it's got a bonus disc or is a special release.

I can't believe people actually do youtube rips. C'mon, if you're gonna be a prick and download music illegally, at least go to torrents where you can get 320's... so when you play them for people, they don't sound like absolute shite.
Well that's the thing, I don't play music for other people. Personal use only, I don't even put them on my iPhone... literally just rip them because it's easier than having to wait for Youtube to load up the track every time I want to play them. They're not leaving my computer, so I don't really see the problem.

From my CD purchases I still put a lot of money back into music, my conscience is clear!
Fair enough. I didn't read your post clearly. I really don't see a problem with that, either...But it would be cool if you purchased some of the tunes you like that you got from youtube rips (assuming they are even available for purchase).

What's everyone's views on illegally downloading a release if you bought it on vinyl?

While I don't download illegally very often, I do sometimes illegally download a release I've got on vinyl, I've got no way of ripping vinyl, and while I adore vinyl, it is nice to have it as a file as well. Downloading stuff I haven't paid for makes me feel guilty, but when I have paid for the vinyl, to me it's fair enough. I'm sure some folk'll think differently and some'll agree, guess it's just down to your own moral code.

Personally, I dont think this is wrong. You have made for your purchase, so have supported the artist and the label and potentially a record store also. Thats just my opinion, I'm sure some people will have negative views against this, maybe because by downloading illegally you are supporting the people putting out these illegal downloads meaning they are more likely to continue, meaning more people who dont purchase the vinyl will illegally download the track.

Edit: Maybe to combat this the Labels could include a free download with vinyl purchase?? I know a few already do, but in this day and age most people like having a copy on their hard drive. This would probably make me more inclined to purchase more vinyl. I very rarely buy any atm, only vinyl only releases atm. But if it came with the track in a digital format included, then I'd also buy the track I love on vinyl even though I could just purchase the MP3.

I ticked buying vinyl and illegal downloads because of this. I think it's wrong still, in the sense that rules is rules and you're breaking 'em by downloading illegally, but I have done it on occasion after buying the vinyl. My warped moral compass tells me that the artists has gained more from me buying the vinyl than downloading a legal digi copy which goes some way to 'justifying' the illegal download. Seriously think all vinyl releases should come with some sort of code to a free download of the tune as a WAV or at the least a 320. That sounds horribly self-entitled of me I know.

Edit: Didn't read LA_Boxers response, think we're roughly on the same page :4:

vinyl from various sources, new and old.. i think the fact that vinyl from retailers has the most votes shows the demand is still there!!!!!

the only music i download is free tunes off soundcloud, giveaways by big names etc. and that's for pure listening.. almost all the tracks i have on vinyl, i don't have a digital version of. This hasn't always been the case, before i started mixing and doing a bit of production i was straight illegal downloading everything.

i find this surprising coming from a person running a label..

you think music is only worth 25-50 pence? wow...

Used to buy online, Never found it to expensive, I'd only get it if the song was worth it. Recently started buying vinyl, It is hurting my wallet, But thats because im not used to it yet, it'll be the norm soon.

As for illegally downloading if you bought the vinyl, I havnt yet, I think I will for certain releases, not all, Ones Id be happy with to listen to on the ipod

What I find surprising, I didn't know the poster ran a label, is that he thinks most mp3's retail at £1.99. The vast majority of my digital purchases come in significantly cheaper than that

I should only be of the opinion that they should be more expensive?

No , i think mp3s are only worth 25-50p , the main barrier to the majority of the people who download illegally is the price , free vs not free. I'm of the opinion that there would be more sales if mp3s were cheaper.

the price of a release(2 tracks) is about £1.99? I wouldn't be 100% sure I only buy vinyl ;-)

I ticked quite a few but in order:

1) Vinyl from online (Chemical, Redeye)
2) Free tunes/mixes
3) Torrenting/blogs
4) Vinyl from record stores
5) Vinyl from Discogs

People can bitch about number 3 but its a fact of life. If I didn't do 3, I wouldn't do 1, 4 or 5.

Honestly, if you can purchase a tune for $2/3 bucks which never degrades over time, can be backed up in multiple places & entire collection fits in your pocket, then why pay $9-12 for a big plate that will degrade & weighs a trillion tons to move a stack of them… buying LPs as your main source of DJ material in 2011… can’t see the point…

(I’m not talking about Collectors, Purists, & Sonic Fidelity, that’s still a reason to buy vinyl).
cant afford cdjs, love the sound of vinyl I guess...got no problems with dubstep/dnb djs using digital stuff, like I'm no stuck up vinyl purist or anything...just what i know...

It's always good at hip hop gigs/nights when they are still using old school methods though, scratching and beat juggling and whatever..but thats hip hop and not dubstep intit :dunce:

shame about the high number of illegal downloads - some people just don't have a clue! :x

Mostly, in fact nearly exclusively, legally buy digital. No record shops around me, so it's rather impractical to buy vinyl. If I ever run across a good record shop with dubstep, I'll swipe it in a heartbeat. I'd order it online if I had a job

Reminds me, I need to burn this shit to cds... I backup regularly, but I hate not having a physical copy.
