If you're going to write boring music, be ready to take the criticism. Nobody is challenging your right to earn a living, but take the criticism like a man and stop crying. It will be easier on your bed of money I'm sure...

Not sure why nobody can understand what Rob is trying to say... How many producers who produce full time have a main project (for money) and side-line projects? We all do it right? Personally music is not my job, its a hobby I have. If I had to live off it I'd be doing exactly what Rob is saying only I'd be off slagging it up in DnB, House n whatever else I could do just to get sum benjamins!

And an extra point. I dont do music for £ yet I still produce Dubstep, Jump-up, deep n electro.. Thats just cos it gets boring doing on type of music all the time! Isnt it only a good thing to experiment?!

Zomby used to make generic wobblers, but (correct me if I'm wrong) he didn't get big until he started doing stuff that was really different and no one had heard before. Zomby EP? That shit is insane.
Compromising your music for the sake of popularity is dooming it from the start isn't it? At the end of the day it'l be forgotten just like 1000 other generic bangers. Once it goes out of fashion, what are you left with?
I'm not going to "do popular stuff" for the sake of exposure if I'm not genuinely feeling it. People can spot that shit a mile off.
Call me optimistic, but having some artistic integrity is what will pay off in the long run.
Not slating you here, Mr Sparx. Much respect for what you've done, but that seems like pretty dodgy advice to be giving.
So does music thats popular have to be generic then? A skillfull producer can work the elements that make that music appealing into their music without it sounding generic (Noisia or 16 Bit for instance) im just saying producers should ignore all this bullshit on here about not using ANY midrange in their sounds (how many of my tunes have used midrange ffs) and not be afraid to write some popular tunes EVEN if they are generic - there's generic music in all corners of this scene not just the popular stuff and compromise is also required in all corners, your only going to get a tune released on a big label if you tailer it to what that label likes.

As someone who spent 2005-2006 with almost no releases from producing mainly just the music I liked at the time (progressive house/breaks) and only actually originally started getting DNB tunes on wax after years of trying when I compromised for the sake of the labels who would give me the time of day. The average amateur producer on here with NO releases to their name has no fucking clue what they are talking about when they do dishing out advice on here about taking a solipsistic approach to production. It has worked for some ppl but it is a hell of a lot more likely you will succeed if you focus on music thats not a minority interest and it doesnt have to be shit thats why ive recommended producers with broad tastes who don't hate on all midrange to focus on stuff thats popular even if only for some of the work they do.

Obviously ppl who hate midrange and cheese shouldn't be attempting to write it as thats not going to convince anyone but i believe most styles of music can be done well despite there being a lot of crap out there its the skillfull producer who can work within constraints to do something both popular and with integrity. Even if you do a tune thats waste but its hugely popular whats the big deal really? Same artist could write a beautiful peice of music the week after - any fan who'd wrote them off by that point is a fan worth losing imo, biggest selling record of mine by a long way was done as a joke whereas much of the music you lot love has barely broke even what do you think that tells me about what its a good idea to be producing?

BTW do u think artists with releases on big labels clearing dancefloors left right and centre is a good long term strategy?

My theory is that mid range dubstep is for idiots, pure and simple. These people have an overall sense of bullshit. Like they haven't got a fucking clue. If anyone even mentions to me that they like some two bit mid range artist I will instantly feel superior.
Hahahahhahaha, I really hope you're trolling. If not, you win the biggest arrogant fagggggot award.

Well its hard to follow Deamonds post, but going back to the title of the thread,

I think the people that listen to midrange vs. deep want something different out of their listening experience.

A lot of the midrange stuff seems to be more suited for taking out aggression to, whereas the deep stuff makes people want to shoegaze and rock slowly back and forth.. One is more like Sex Pistols punk where the other is more like Lou Reed punk.

Its kind of like Indica vs. Sativa, what particular stone are you going for?

Wastethread.
The only thing more boring that this bullshit topic is constantly seeing it on the board.
NO-ONE from either side of the argument cares about the other sides opinion.
And giving the same bullshit cliches on why you like the style of music you listen wont change anything.
Let it rest.

Well I never!

"Shoegazing (also known as shoegaze) is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged from the United Kingdom in the late 1980s. It lasted there until the mid 1990s"

Those bloody subgenres! :D

I was referring more to the actual verb than the genre, but yeah I really like those two bands as well.

I used to have a MBV t-shirt, wonder what the hell happened to it.

I slightly touched the shoegaze genre some years ago but didn't really get into it. MBV got some great stuff
