Obviously its not just about beat matching, its about selection, response, interaction and lots of other things too.

Also I'd prefer to see the likes of Shiverz, Lost etc vibe-ing out and bouncing about behind the decks (just) mixing one track into another than some moody ass dude on a laptop doing all manner of technical shit that nobody can dance to.

(Not saying DJs that 'just' mix cant be moody and not saying all laptop 'artists' are moody and play undanceable music......but we are making assumptions here, so thats what i'm doing too!!)

Obviously its not just about beat matching, its about selection, response, interaction and lots of other things too.

I dont think this is the point, given current technolgies, events/performances in general becoming a whole bigger level. Traditional DJing is still limited, be it vinyl/cdj or whatever.

Thats not to say the person performing has to be hunched over a latop for an hour and a half.
Controllers, MPC's, Samplers should all have a larger roll to play in a set. This will allow for far more control and versatility than any vinyl/CD/Vinyl Control system.

selection, response, interaction all play a key roll in whatever way you perform a set, so for us, I honestly think the more options and outputs the better.

Currently we only and have only used vinyl and CDs for a set, that being said we would happily make the jump when it becomes viable in terms of the hardware we own.

Nah, I'm with you on that. It's the idea that having a computer do the beatmatching makes it pointless that I don't get. I mean, getting the beats going at the same speed is basically a mechanical thing not a creative decision - which is why computers can do it - so why should I care if the DJ does automate it and pays more attention to the actual creative stuff instead? Or to bouncing around grinning like a maniac, come to that.

Yeah, but there aren't many people around at the moment who've hit on a way of using all the options in a way that's actually more fun / interesting / entertaining for the audience than a good DJ set. It'd be interesting to talk about the people who are doing that and what they're doing, but for a lot of people it just seems to be about gratuitously trying to do as much stuff on the fly as possible so that you can say that you're doing something... which can be kind of technically interesting if you're the sort of person (like me) who gets excited by clever ways of running a midi controller through a bunch of custom reaktor stuff or whatever, but seems a bit pointless in the grand scheme of things.

i think everyone should care if the Dj they are watching cant beatmatch without a laptop.
its not like getting the tracks in time manually leaves you with no time for EQ'ing/blending the tracks etc (creative stuff)
its just sad to see the decline in vinyl DJ's, inevitable though i suppose.

theirs a big difference between seeing a local dj spin tunes which are anthems that have already been released, or seeing a local dj spin GEMS which have also been released that pretty much nobody has heard except for your audiophile or intense music head

EX: instead of playing chainsaw calligraphy by 16bit, play Jump, PCP, or skyline....those tunes are overlooked a grip to the average dubstep listener, so most haven't heard these tunes and would percieve it to be an exclusive

if your track selection is good enough, you could play tunes spanning every year possible and get it to sound like the tunes are actually exclusives since nobody has heard them before.
