Music genres are never a musical sound, but they're cultural signifiers.

For example, dubstep isn't a sound. It's a musical subculture with several sounds that we associate with that culture. Also apart of the subculture is sound system influences aesthetics, pirate radio and... dun dun DUUUN. Slang. One of those slang words is 'deep', to describe music. If some people don't get it, it's understandable, they can ask what it means. But just because it's hard to understand for outsiders doesn't mean it's 'pretentious'. Are certain scientific terms 'pretentious' because not everyone knows what 'phyletic gradualism' means?

People need to stop worrying about names for genres and other stupid words. All words are stupid, the ones people are mostly up in arms about are the new ones. The one's that are popping up now. Why? Because we've gotten used to music related terminology that was around before we were born and now view them as law. But let's be honest, doesn't 'rock & roll' sound really fucking stupid as well? Or 'hip-hop'? I mean, shit. Rock & roll isn't made by rolling boulders down a hill and hip-hop isn't the sound of feet hitting the floor when people are hopping around. And while we're at it, isn't 'heavy' a stupid word to describe music? No? And you know why? We've gotten used to it.

Subcultures have stupid names, either the name of the subculture (aka, genre) sounds stupid ('future garage') or the people in that culture use stupid slang ('deep') to talk about it. It ain't nuttin' new, it's been around for ages.

Maybe it's time to just listen to the music and stop worrying about ethimology.

the people that i meet that latch on to this stuff still have tunnel plugs in their ears, sleeve tattoos and numerous facial piercings, so they can't get a job, and the hardcore screamo wave is gone, so they need a new scene to latch on to.

why is that pretentious? It actually describes a lot of the scene. Throw the word "Pads" in there and you practically have every other 2 step tune coming out at the moment.
The only reason it may seem pretentious is because you know pretentious people who have inaccurately used it to describe their music interests. Saying it is "deep" then expecting people to know what that is even supposed to mean is far more pretentious.

yeah, if im talking to someone about this sort of music id expect them to know what i mean if i described something as deep. if i said "you can really hear the innovative use of augmentation, a serialist influence on the evolving melody and MY WORD i was blown away by that imperfect cadence before the drop" i'd sound well bloody pretentious



end of the day, i wouldnt use 'deep' as a word to signify the type of music i listen to but thats not to say it doesnt hold some use in quickly and accurately giving someone an impression of your tastes

"Pretentious" gets thrown around too much I think, like "genius" and "hilarious". I've been called pretentious for using (mostly) proper grammar online or in IMs. I thought that was ridiculous, but of course when I objected to the claim even that was seen as a pretentious action. Don't even think about pulling out a semicolon these days; you'll be branded a pretentious dick.

^just to argue abit...what if you want to go to dubstep night in tennessee ? admittedly nasheville seems to get an array of performers but there really aren't many options in memphis.

i would just enjoy 'deeper' stuff slightly more....and more subs less light show. and/or it just gets kind of old.

it actually seems to get old even for the people who really enjoy it! i went to 12th planet over the weekend and afterwards everyone i was with was like 'aww man im good on some dubstep right now lets not listen to that anymore'
