One thing that's kind of easy to forget when you're wrapped up in electronic music is that bands almost always have someone else to do the mixing, with a variable degree of input from the band themselves. The attitude often being "we've done the actual creative stuff by writing and playing the songs, the process of recording them and making them sound decent is comparatively less important" rather than the attitude that some electronic musicians have of "I have to synthesize every drum hit from scratch because otherwise the music won't be really mine."

i dont know if i agree with that. bands have very tight relationships with their producers. the same with producers and engineers. it just so happens that the engineers tend to know how to achieve what the producer and band are looking for.
the same way that a lot of electronic musicians don't synthesise everything, they might use someone else's samples, or presets etc. but they will know what they're looking for with regards to what they're writing.

oh wow ok then. thanks for all the input, guys.

well that all depends on the band...
u have that in both... some instrumentalists know what sound they're after and will know how to make it happen in the studio (think tom yorke, u2s the edge, etc)... whereas some are clueless and focus on the writing (sometimes even with the old school mentality of "the studio dude is just a techy")
and then u have the same with producers... i bet a cat like timbaland would not sound the way he sounds if he weren't always with Demo, his mixing engineer... who shaped the timbaland sound all thru the year VS cats like dr dre, who's known for his skills on the ssl way more then for his rapping/writing abilities... amon tobin also comes to mind
People often forget that the line between production and mixing has been blurred to a great extend VERY RECENTLY. its a new thing to do all these things while producing... and i think one has to keep it in mind. i still think there's a way to focus on the music without knowing that stuff ...

... im new to dubstep but, still...
Do electronic bands use notes when writing riffs? or do they just use FX ?
Who plays notes now days? Pianos and keyboards and guitars and any kind of instruments with notes are so overrated.

Seriously, have you been living in a whole for like, the last 40 years?
You would not believe how tight and groovy and a live drum kit will sound when recorded correctly! Just check out the new Submotion Orchestra album, all live drums on that!
As it goes I just finished producing/ recording/ mixing a 4 track EP with a band, quite downtempo progressive stuff, but got very instrumental and experimental with these new tracks of theirs and added some nice dub elements, synth basses, strings, wobbles... also great live grand piano too! This band is seriously tight, the drummer is nuts, serious skill (like the rest of the band really!) I will post up here when its all mastered and ready for release, think some of you would like the vibes on the EP!
BUT YES, you idiot, of course bands have mixdowns too. You really should just quit life or get in the Real World outside of electronic music, sharpish! Usually a band records and plays obviously, then the person who recorded the material (so me) or another mix engineer will handle the mixdowns. I like to have the band at all the mix sessions so they can give any input to how they want the mixes to sound, thats what is most important after all, that the band are happy with the tracks, as well as me!

Ldizzy wrote:Haha Jr Ud be amazed at how hard people work to produce good instrumental music...
and once u get it u realize most professionally recorded bands sound ultra synthetic.. something uve got used to ...
a good example of that would be Smells like teen spirit ... listen to each element... it has to be one of the most beautiful mixes ever done (apparently it was actually remixed by Andy Wallace after Butch Vig failed to capture the essence of the composition in the eye/ear of Kurt Cobain)
its a science. and these guys work REALLY HARD.. and they have to record all the stuff too
everything we do actually comes from that imo.
this.
I studied as an audio engineer and i can assure you that this is 100% true
