yeah dude, specifically the tutorial below helped me get to grips with the types of sound I wanted. It gave me a good idea of the basics and enabled me to start experimenting
Its all about sines and adding the right chain of effects tbh

When you guys are automating an eq and making your vowel sounds manually, are you using the stock eq's in your daws? I can't find any eq's where I can automate the frequencies or the q, just the amount of boost/attenuation. :/

Use a notch filter and just run it up and down your sound to get the vowels. VPS Philta works well for me, you can get a lite version free with any Computer Music Mag disc. I also like FabFilter Volcano II but you'll need to buy that. There may be a demo though.

But every neurofunk producer does that and they don't all have the Skrillex vowel sound. I automate notch filters all the time and it doesn't sound like a vowel at all. The vowels come from having both large peaks and large dips in very specific points on the frequency spectrum.

Exactly. I tried a formant filter and got some new sounds out of it using only two of the formant bands. Got some ....interesting.... growl sounds but I'm not really satisfied with it.

Ok well let me be more specific - a notch filter with high resonance peaks. There is a preset in VPS Philta that works perfectly. It is literally just a notch with a decent bit of resonance with a lil gap between the peaks.

and volcano lets you have high peaks also.
...but lets not digress into effects chains after the sound..
Safe for the video sparx il check it out and see if i can incorporate it into uhe ace xD

^ I second that Tyler, doooope drop man, lovin the sleight vocals there too. Hope you post that release here when it's finished and picked up, which it will be I'm sure, or pm me so I can buy it.. but in the mean time have any FM8 tips for those of us whom that synth makes feel like busted noobs??
Biggup man! I'll let you know when it's done.
As for FM8 tips, I've noticed a lot of people wanting to notch filter somewhere in the FX chain to get the vowel movement in the sound, but the key is to use FM8's onboard filters (and distort post filter so you don't lose any of the thickness of the bass). I don't use any filters outside of FM8 at all.
Edit: Also, formant waveforms are your friends. You can find them on the Ops tab. Again, no notch filtering necessary. Hope this helps.

Yes, like I mentioned, FM8 basically has a "YOY" button in it lol, it's under effects, called "Talk"

Verrryyy interesting...That has given me a new perspective. I'm going to have at it again and try to do it without outside fx/filtering.

Considering skrillex has said he uses it - it's no wonder more people are picking it up
Tyler - would like your tune a lot more if it didn't sound like skrillex. Sorry.

i only like to use that "wahwah" as an FX on one of my split frequencies, cause if you run your whole sound through it it just sounds muddy and too wet.

Not at all. You've clearly got some production skills up your sleeve - just unfortunate imho that you're mimicking someone else rather than doing your own thing. Noone ever made it to the top by copying someone else.
