If theres exceptions then it doesn't have everything to do with age does it. I've studied music and played instruments for over 10 years of my life. Music can be a trendsetter for any age group, it's all down to the individuals mind. I've seen 30 y.o. muscle assholes moshing to brostep, 40+ y.o. drunk neonazi bikers picking fights with kids at hardcore shows... so yeah, age isn't all that important when it comes to music.
But young people are the ones that go to raves the most, they have more contact with the scenes and it's towards them that brostep is marketed.

The raves that me and friends attend and play at are always crowded with teens. However the sound pushed is always oldschool. Admittedly the exposure is aimed at the younger. However the internet is mainly what spreads sounds nowadays. With shows like GetDarker and nights like DMZ more of the younger crowd are getting into the original sound. I wouldn't say it's raves pushing the brostep sound. I hear you man, atmosphere is the first thing I look for. There is some ok party music, I guess, but it gets old fast if it doesn't have any depth to it. I like some magnetic man, a few nero tunes and so on, but it's nothing i can play tens of times, you know? I do find one thing interesting: the fact that it's not the brostep producers signed to majors, with the exception of Skrillex.
Magnetic Man and Katy B are on Columbia (+ remixes from the likes of Royal-T, Caspa, Zinc, Girl Unit etc), Nero & 16bit on MTA/Mercury. Not to mention all the stuff on Island Records UK, Distance being signed, plus people like Breakage, Photek, Mensah, Disclosure, MJ Cole, Nu:Tone and Roni Size handling production and remixes for the likes of Jess Mills and Josh Osho.
