I always liked that Horsepower remix of New Flesh as well.

Good luck with the new stuff. Sure it will teach the new breed a thing or two!

Benny - Like others have said, any return of the Horsepower would be fantastic. On your questions...

Vocals - Yes. It may not be to everyone's tastes and I think you'd want to avoid the blandness that Goldie got into for instance, but there's definitely a need for variety. One of my recent favourites was Distance's "Saints and Sinners" laregly on the strenght of the vocal.

Halfstep - Is fine but it's true that it can become monotonous. I liked Burial's comments on keeping that slinky sexiness in dubstep's rhythms. If there's anyone that can do that it's Horsepower.

Dark/Light - Dubstep's taken on a dark tone almost exclusively which was novel when it was in response to lighter stuff but it's almost become the rule. There have been some lighter tracks recently - D1 "Identify," the Distance track, Macabre's "Lift Off," and some others - that have felt like a breath of fresh air. I'd like to hear more alongside the dark but not to it's exclusion.

first of all...RESPECT! i play a lot of your old tracks all the time in my sets. it really livelies the place up with the shffling slinky beats! the turn u on releases and dub war record are teh sound that got me into this, way before i knew odf anything called dubstep. thank you!
i am so happy to hear you are returning to the fray!!!
i personally don't like a lot of vocals, but some wisps here and there is cool, more as a musical element than words and singing.
i hope that you keep your identity and not meld into what everyone else is doing.

Obviously you should do what you want, but you wouldn't have posted if you didn't want to hear opinions so....

Vocals: Theres a bit of anti-mc/vocals feeling, but theres definately room for this kind of stuff. They can add so much to the sound/vibe of a track. For example Roni Size - New Forms, bahamdias vocals turn that from a good track to a legendary track! Skream's remix of almighty father also come to mind. Also Kode9 and Spaceape stuff. Theres so much uncharted territory here though really, some pushing out of boats needs to be done..

Beats: Theres loads of half-step, and nots so much old school at the mo it seems. But honestly, I love both when done well.

Dark/light: I think the best music plays these elements off each other, gets a balance. Hours of utter darkness is boring. Likewise for light/fluffiness. Its all about mixing the ratios around. Or something. Just like the guiness I have embibed before unleashing my thoughts on an unsuspecting world.

Mmmmmm....

....guinessss

Vocals would be good - Love to hear sb on a consciousness type vibe (New York has to be the place to find vocalists!!) Love to hear a bit of nu-soul sensibility.
Beats - well both. Half step don't have to be dirge step. just drive at about 70 some of the time.
Hovering on the edge of darkness is the place to be. But then again you know this already! Looking forward to hearing new stuff - massive respect

Ah, vocalists. Not sure about this one. Log On and Stick & Move worked really well, but I have issues with a lot of UK hip hop vocalists. Just as long as it doesn't go too commercial, I'm sure it will be good. If dubstep wants to avoid the pitfalls of dnb, don't go down the 'Shake Ur Body' path.

I've never seen Horsepower as particularly dark actually, and likewise they've never really followed fashions and done their own thing beat-wise.

I guess what I'm saying is that as long as the new Horsepower 12 isn't signed to Positiva with its eye on the charts, it'll keep me happy, I'm sure.

Rock on.

Big up Horsepower each and every time!

True origionators, you lot are partly responsible for me getting into this music mate.

There are no rules to what you SHOULD or SHOULDN'T produce, did I miss a meeting or something? Why do people think there's this mould that must be adhered to with dubstep?

Im looking forward to hearing ANYTHING from you lot benny mate. Don't lose the music man. Big up. :)

Big up Horsepower Crew, you are the originators :D

Nowadays everybody produces halfstep. But from you I would rather love the dark 2step sound you made earlier. Film-details, skankin rhtym-sections, far-eastern samples, nice wobbling basslines. Don't care of the trends of sound and you will stay true to yourself.

i find happy, bouncy tracks get the best response from my crowds, but I think that maybe because they work in juxtaposition to all the darkness...

The most popular songs have been light or aggressive. the halfstep ambience is better for the vibe.

straight vocals are definitely needed if you want to take the sound somewhere else and appeal to a wider audience, but I don't think it would appeal to many people already in the sound.

christ, anything has it's place in dubstep, that's why it's so great!
