Re: Fight Club
Have you ever seen the movie? It's called Fight Club because that's the aspect of the movie that has the most marketable ring to it. It's kind of a crappy critique of consumerism, really. Not that great a film.
And btw, a hipster is something you call someone who likes stuff a lot of people like but you don't. It's pretty meaningless.

You mean, everything people have ever liked in the entire time that humans existed on this planet? What is 'substance' anyway? Or better yet, who are you to decide what has substance?leyenda303 wrote:I typically look at 'hipster' anything as things that have all style, no substance.

My girlfriend at the time was shocked I hadn't seen it, it starts, within about 15 minutes I said "Ok so he's a ghost right?", she got in a huff, two weeks later the relationships over.wub wrote:magma wrote:Damn, that's fucking low...Neptune wrote:I've still not seen Fight Club.

Quick aside;
We were watching Gladiator with one of my mates and his not-the-sharpest girlfriend. During the open battle scene, where Russel Crowe says "At my signal, unleash HELL!", the young lady said quite matter of factly "That's a silly name for a dog".

That's the point...it's my opinion. You knew this was the case as I later said that it was my definition of hipster. So it's what I see as having substance/value...Genevieve wrote:Have you ever seen the movie? It's called Fight Club because that's the aspect of the movie that has the most marketable ring to it. Anyway, hypefiend why did you lie and say you'd watched the film if you haven't and why have you avoided answering what your favourite films are? Trust me, there's only about 20 films which you could say which would have me shaking my head.

Re: Fight Club
havent seen the film but the book is good
Not the biggest fan of pulp fiction though, probably missed the point of it entirely but wouldn't put it anywhere near the plot of fight club, but i probably dislike it because it seems to be everybody at uni's favourite film, just like how they love Radiohead and James Blake
My favourite film is Around the World in 80 days with Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan.

Re: Fight Club
Exactly what I was saying when I said some people think hipster means elitist. And a lot of people think elitist means liking anything that's not in the box office/top 40. Herzog and Kurosawa are both amazing. Goddard...well he was good early on but did end up making some pretentious shit pretty quickly.lloydnoise wrote:I fucking love Kurosawa, am I a hipster?Words wrote:lol hipster crowd are into herzog, godard, kurosawa and so on, dont think you would find many that would be caught dead admitting they enjoyed fight club

Re: Fight Club
yah, it seems the word hipster is generally used when referring to those who place a lot of value on the idea of trends.leyenda303 wrote:Exactly what I was saying when I said some people think hipster means elitist. Those trends can't be too popular or they become mainstream (unless they are so terribly mainstream that liking them becomes a hilarious ironic pursuit) so there is an elitism at the heart of the idea.
Nevertheless it is a pointless, nebulous concept that has no real meaning and people should stop using it so much (like chav).
