wasn't actually dubstep, more like trip hop(?) or something but very dubstepish

back in 08. production still smashes it!

actually it was a bit later when i heard cockney thug was the tune that finally got me into the whole sound for good

I went to TRIBE in Leeds, next to the corn x and went up the stairs when I was about 16/17 years old about 5 years ago. I saw Simon (didn't know who he was at the time, just some bald guy) I tried to be all cool and suave because there were some major gangster looking guys, stood nodding their heads to some tracks they were playing via the turntables at the side of the shop. So I staggered over to Simon and asked him if he knew of any good music which was kinda like jungle or liquid dnb (with the rolling basslines) and heavy? I was searching for the answer to the question, but at that time I didn't know what I was looking for, or the question...
Simon just handed me the tectonic plates album (the gold cover), I looked at it and didn't recognise any of the artists but I thought fuck-it, he'll know what he's doing. So I bought it, and took it home and it blew me away.
Then the next week, I ended up at Subdub, coming up so you better get this partay started, Oh boy did I come up.

& the rest is history.

>My first post on dsf, i've been lurking for about 2 years now, just never needed an account. Hopefully I can contribute more to the site, hope everyone is well.

Got started DJ'ing when I was 14 (year 2000) because of my love of hip-hop. Around that same time I got into house - living in/around Chicago it's unavoidable. Fell in love with hip-hop culture, and an English friend of mine introduced me to Dizzee Rascal and grime. From there, heard UKG.This was around 04/05 so it just started blending together with dubstep. It's always just sort of been around, I guess.

I've just always loved all types of music. Started playing drum & bass along with dubstep around 2005.

Use to be massively into DnB around 2000-2004 then got bored of it and went back to listening to hip-hop until I heard Take me Away by chase and status which I loved so copped the album which had some dubstep on it obviously. Was well interested so explored further and the quickly became obsessed with the sound.
Also In for the kill skreamix was one the first things i remember being struck by (probably the same for a lot of people)

First heard dubstep in a rave at rhythm factory when Adam F was randomly playing at a Vinyl Touch night back in 08 i think

I was a big drum and bass fan for ages and a big TC lover...then I heard where's my money Caspa version. Glad to say I'm on a lot deeper vibe now, but that tune still does funny things to my belly. Also saw Benga at SE1 in 2008 when he was playing at some psytrance party thing. The dance floor was empty and full of these london hipster kids skanking so slowlyyy (now to be understood as "The K Dance") Me and my mate couldn't understand it and just rushed the dance floor and started tearing out hard (no mosh mind! f that!) Oh and I was on crutches at the time. Only took one with me though so I could skank out a lil easier ;)

I discovered by somebody moaning when common dreads by enter shikari came out saying that they hate the way their new music is dubstep. I loved the album so i was like gotta check out this dubstep stuff. So I went on to youtube and started listening. Then what really really brought me over was I found out enter shikari were playing MK bowl with chase and status so I checked out chase and status and then after that I was proper into dubstep. The End.

I used to listen to minmal, techhouse and triphop (still do). Then I got draged into "brostep" for a while... then I heard Kryptic Minds "badmann VIP" and Loefah "disko rekah" which sold me to the dark and more minimal bass tunes. So even though most of you hate the brostep thing it actually might bring in some people to real dub. :W:

Was on a Hip-Hop trip around the end of '09 and a friend was putting me onto Mike Slott, Hud Mo and Rustie, which led to Joy Orbison and others... My entrance to the realm has been very much left field, I remember the same friend linking me to 'Work Them' and being like WTF? Been listening to everything I can since.

Living in Limerick, which has an absolutely TERRIBLE nightlife (was out last night in the largest, most popular club and they wouldn't serve mixed shots FFS). However, local heads have been successfully running a few different nights for the last while now, Macronite being the biggest. Loefah and Chunky even made it over in October, and naturally I missed it. Missed Surgeon too :u:

Made it to Dour last summer where I first got to hear Joy O, Ramadanman play it out on proper systems. Joy O followed Hyph Mngo with Skeng and I nearly lost it, it was incredible! I wish I could travel to Dublin for more of the same, big names every week, but in final year of college so I'm pretty restricted right now.

Currently listening to the bass scene and Hip-Hop, L.A. beats/instrumental stuff like Teebs, whatever it is Star Slinger plays... Big fan of R&B such as the Weeknd and stuff like Onra.

To my friends, I'm that guy who isn't allowed near the iPod/laptop at parties. I feel so alone sometimes :corncry:

Just so you know, best not to call it dub here or you'll be linked to videos of Lee Scratch Perry and King Tubby. I do wonder why it has caught on for people to call dubstep dub though. It seems to be fairly recent too. I honestly thought people were referring to actual dub when I first heard it as no one used it back in 07 to refer to dubstep when I first started listening to it.

Any party where Skeng is disallowed sounds shit. At least you have one friend with good taste if he got you into the good stuff.

Got into it in '09 when one of my friends slinged me the Benga - diary of an afro warrior and sukh knight - Cheese Loueez EP. Didn't quite get it at first, but when when I ent to my first live set which were supported by funktion one's I was immediately sold. Just goes to show that dubstep cannot be fully enjoyed on a pair of shit Ipod earplugs.. Nowadays I will go to almost anything as long as there's funktion one's.
