so yeh you're both right... the lyrics were just good-time, story telling, but at that point in history the scene and the sounds coming out of it meant something huge... these days it's come full circle and rap isn't a hopeful young blossoming art form, its already done the rounds and become a typical showbiz industry

Well, the idea of an MC if I'm not mistaken was primarily to showcase and hype the DJ. And obviously the better the MC, the more they could hype the DJ. Then the MC sort of evolved into an entity in and of itself.

Black Eyed Peas won't be remembered in 50 years time except for their shallow feat of biggest selling single of 00s. But when people chat about who the great artists were I bet you Radiohead get mentioned. They tick both boxes of being very popular and not being able to do any wrong in critics' eyes.

Yeah. Radiohead was one of the few exceptions I was thinking of when I was talking about "timeless" mainstream groups of today.

Radiohead without a doubt will be talked about, and deservedly so, but I do think ballbags like the Black Eyed Peas will be too. Think you might be giving people too much credit to think otherwise. Look at Abba.

BEP have sold 65 million records around the world man. Like it or not, people will talk about them like people talk about other shit bands like ABBA. If not the Black Eyed Peas, then substitute it with other whack band. My point about "I Gotta Feeling" being rinsed from now until eternity still stands though.

The fact is, even people that don't like bands like that know who they are, so will have an opinion them either way. They'll be talked about.

I thought the harmonic series already lined up fairly well with the major diatonic scale. I imagine it would take a verrrry long time for peoples' ears to become acclimatized to a new tonal structure.

Practically all musical genres have been labeled and considered a "fad" by older generations or people that do not enjoy it. Rock n roll was a fad, blues was a fad, and jazz was a fad. Shit, I'm sure even negative minded jealous folk considered the works of beethoven trash way back when. However, we still listen to these types of music and now consider the finer examples of them timeless.

I'm sure there are long forgotten small pockets of musical styles from the past which have been for the most part forgotten, but as long as their is musical innovation there will be hate aimed at it. Only time will tell what musical output now has lasting power (so if you're right about rihanna being our generations little wing i hope it is at least the remix w/ chris brown for the irony).

IMO what becomes a lasting/timeless song is that it fucking resonates with people (broad i know). As long as we have a civilization we will have older music that survives through the progressions of stylistic elements and genres and is remembered/enjoyed well into the future.
