I've been reluctant to actually post a point of view on this topic, because mine is rather harsh; i make music for a living, including all of its glorious (free 1st class upgrade!) and inglorious (the client that i took on as a favor and is paying shit wants a FOURTEENTH MIX of a tune!) moments. Like a bunch of folks here, this is what i do.
And in that aspect, the instant-- and i do mean, seriously, the INSTANT-- you question whether or not this is right for you/the project/whatever, it's over. You'll figure out that you're wasting time on the thing you're not 100% about, and turning down other opportunities that could potentially go somewhere-- because you've invested all of this time/money/effort/etc into YOUR music.
If the stakes are high, and you're questioning it-- yes. give up. walk away and do something else.
Now, as MadEP states, if this is a HOBBY-- keep it a hobby! I started cycling 2 years ago and i'm never ever ever going to be as fast or as hardcore as anyone in the tour de france... nor am i trying to be. But i'm also not wasting my time following a crazy training regimen, watching race strategy tutorials on youtube, and trying to lose 30lbs for my "season."
Folks who are doing this for fun-- really just writing when you're inspired, not finishing alot of tunes, etc-- that's great if it gives you enjoyment. Music is an exceptional thing in the human world, and I wholeheartedly support people finding the enjoyment of it; it's part of the reason I taught for 7 hours yesterday. Music as a job is not always fun, and it really can't be-- tracks need to be submitted on time, you have to be prepared for rehearsals, tour with that band you don't like, etc-- but the rewards are phenomenal.
If that's not the route you want to go down, then just keep having fun with it. Get off DSF and make some music!
TBH i think this current wave of desperation is right in the cycle- the great skrillex ascension happened just about 2 years ago-- a bunch of people who'd never been into music before got really inspired. It takes about 2 years for you to realize that you're in the throes of that Ira Glass moment-- you realize that your work just isn't as good as you'd hoped, and you're faced with the options of either carrying on and getting better, or walking away. It's really not easy to keep at it knowing that you're pumping out mediocre material, but people do, and go on to make amazing things.

I just like to add something to this thread again,i have spent 10 years doing music as a hobby.I have 2 kids work in excess of 60 hrs a week and in general am a very busy boy.It took me years to actually get to the point i can finish a tune i am happy with and not once have i thought about giving up.The reason for this is i have absolutely no ambition to sign to a record label or dj out.I love my job,i work in maintenance for a company and have very stressful days because 2 of us have 12 machines and 2 buildings to look after and its a very very busy enviroment.When i get home i spend a bit of time with the fam and then get lost in logic for hours and hours which after the graft i've done during the day is heaven and its my heaven.
Being creative is a getaway for me and thats why i have no ambition to sell my tunes.I suppose everyone has a dream and most people nowadays have that wanting to be in the limelight but fuck that i would sooner be head noding on my own infront of my laptop screen to something i have produced,it don't get no better than that.
It just boils down to practice and learning your craft,as simple as that.If you want to learn you will,perseverance is the key.

If you feel like giving up just bring up one of your first tracks and compare it to your latest. Always a boost to see how much you have improved.
Not a dubstep producer, but a really huge guy in the music industry. He's got a lot of good thoughts.

Many times when I started I basically said 'this is stupid and wasting my time, no one listens to my music and never will' and I used to stop producing for a few weeks at a time but id always come back and end up writing something haha.
Now im so glad I stuck through it all to be honest, as long as you enjoy what you do never give up

i feel like dat givin up too .. sumtimes u think der is soooo much to learn and u spend hours makin beats, but no dough .....
... i make music cos its better than watchin TV and playin 5-6 hrs on PS3 a day ... plus I'm addicted to makin beats ... everytime I hear a tune .. its like .. a cat out to make a beat ... can't help it ..
i feel like givin up when I hear other people too ... i think dat dey are much better and therefore i'm wastin my time ...
.. but den I can see how much I have improved from my first mixes ... if you go to my youtube page u can see dat i keep improving ... and when i make a sik beat (sumthing I like) ... i just get buzzzing ... i still got a lot to learn ... maybe i'll stop in the future ... 4 now ... i just want to make beats ....

I have my creative days that can last for weeks, then I have my off days it happens... In the past 5 day work week I finished 3 tunes, i'm pretty proud of that.. But I wont let it get to me when I've got a writers block, and i most certainly wont let the fact that I may not be making money bring me down either.. You gotta do you, and do it all for yourself.. Get motivated, smoke more weed, watch some trippy ass movies, hit up a dub show, do we you gotta do to get your head straight.

Absolutely. Some people just need a serious wake up call. If your heart is in it then you'll do whatever it takes to push through it. Sure you might doubt your craft but that's an accident. You didn't mean to think that because you believe in what you do.
If giving up and doing something else instead seriously crosses your mind, I don't think your heart is really in it. Ask yourself what you really want to do.

never giv up mate always make music for urself and it will shine in the music u make, take joy in just makin tunes that u like to listen too , i know wat u mean but giving up isent going to change the way the industry is. u hav to really sit down and think is this a hobbie or a passion =)
