It varies a lot some use MPCs and rarely use DAWs, some use NI Maschine, some use Ableton, some FL. I've actually got a lot of tracks from Chicago heads still with the FL ID3 tag haha. Like any other genre it doesn't really matter what you use, just what you're used to.
There's some vids around of Nate working in FL, trying to track them down but he's mostly doing his hip hop project now. Then here's Boylan on a newer MPC.

this shit goes hard man some pretty unique rhythms. can't ever hate a nice soul sample too.

used to absolutely despise this type of music when people first started playing it over here but now i can't get enough of it, one of the best styles i've discovered in years. most fun music i've heard in ages.
i agree about the drums though, i can never get them sounding just right
meybe sum1 culd give me a little feedback on dis wip

I like to imply the drum rhythm for the most part and use a lot of quick fills to spice up that implied rhythm
