I do this fairly often on purpose to be honest. I've pretty much accepted that melody is my weak point (ie, I'm rubbish at coming up with anything catchy or original), so if I want something with a little complexity to it I'll usually just jack a melody from a tune in another genre and switch it up just enough for it to not be a complete rip-off. I don't sell my music anyway so meh

The good thing about writing lyrics is that you can Google them and see if they have been used before! It's soul destroying when they have been, though. Still stuck when it turns out you've copied someone's melody too!

I've thought about taking midi files from songs I like and taking different chords from them that I wouldn't have thought to use. I should probably learn more chords... what the hell is C D F#??
