Finding a significant amount of cash: keep or return?

one midsummer's night my sister found a wallet with 2000 or something euros in cash and a bag of amphetamine. she took it with her, weighed wether to take the wallet to the police or take the money, so she took the money and threw the rest to a bin. i think that's ok drug dealers don't need mo money (not that he or she would have collected it from the police station)

so if it's drug money or some othervise wrongfully acquired then keeps but if it's normal ppls money then return it

I would try to find a way to return it without going through a third party (ie giving it to the people at the store). If it was around 1k, most likely the person who lost it is going to be doing something to find it. Putting a note up would defenitely be a good idea. I would do that, but NOT put the amount as to avoid people just lying to get the cash. I'd probably give it a month or so and if I couldn't find the rightful owner, I would donate it to some charity.

Disclaimer: This is what I would IDEALLY do, but who knows what I would actually do if it happened to me. It's well within the realm of possibility that I'd say, "fuck it, time to buy a Moog"!

normally i would hand it in some where but seen as im strapped for cash at the moment i would probably keep it and pay off some debts
