I'm not trying to put myself above others. I'm just trying to help the people here realize that you will never get anywhere if all you do is play catch-up with other artists.
Skrillex's favorite band was KoRn, but he didn't get famous by trying to BE KoRn, he got famous by doing his own thing which eventually caught on and he pretty much invented a fucking style of music.
You're not going to get anywhere or do anything special by going on a forum and asking how to recreate an artist's sound, and then hiding behind the excuse of "Oh, I don't want to copy him, I just want to learn from making the sound.".
If you're just wanting to do this as a hobby and not become some rockstar type producer, then it's w/e to me. But if you expect to become the next big thing by copying last month's fad then you're kidding yourself. I'm just trying to help.

i've gotten some similar results playing around with massive. check out oscillators like duckorgan, chrome, and dirty throat to name a few. try putting 2-3 LFOs on multiple things, like the filter cutoff, weight position on different OSCs and intensity etc. if you play around with the ratios right it kinda gives it that warping effect. bounce it out after you got a rough idea of the sound and run it through some distortion plug ins, etc.

Like I said earlier, Skrillex created his style after trying to copy Noisia. So copying someone is not at all negative

it's impossible to copy someone imo. no matter what you do, even if you're trying to copy the style, anything you make is going to sound like you and have your own special flavor. might sounds similar, so what.

i strongly rely on distortion for my sounds, i automate a free distortion plugin called expresso (its nice it has a lot of parameters although a bit buggy)
i use love philter in FL (you can have up to 8 filters in one instance and i put envelopes on different filters on different positions, some with high res some with low)
i admit massive is more user friendly and is less of a headache than playing around with loads of filters.
lastly i bounce some of the sounds that i want to improve further and do a bit of EQ automation on each sound just to get it exactly way i want it then add a bit of camelcrusher at the end.

Man that is a complicated workflow. See me, I just make a loop with random sounds and then I EQ them and maybe put in some reverb for the cymbals and then I just repeat the loop and call it a beat. lmao. I could never get into the more complicated stuff. idk how you guys do it.

its not really complicated depending on how ya go about it, for example to make my waveform nice and powerful i only use one or two distortion plugins but cranked up plenty (takes about 10 seconds)
then most of my love philter stuff using 8 filters are just presets iv made in the past, i tweak a few filter envelopes and then adjust the volumes on each filter or whatever else (takes about 5 minutes)
then i go back and tweak the waveform for another few minutes to see if i can get it sounding better or cleaner.. so i usually get a bass thats ready to fire in about 10 minutes or less.
later on as the song is more complete i might bounce a few sounds that dont flow as good then do a it of eq automating, i admit that can take a good 15 minutes for 1 sound sometimes but the end product is important to me i guess, id rather make one song every 2 weeks that sounds good rather than make a song every few days that sounds okay.

I hardly think some halftime wobble is destroying dubstep. Got a really rude, minimal feel. Reminds me of old Monsta/Jakes/Some of Skreams better tearout...
OP... megalodon is a THEY, not a him, its Cory Sinjin and Phil T. Actually didnt know people listen to these guys haha, thats sick, I only know them through phz.
Finally, its all about the groove less then the actual patches, use alot of envelope controls, really focus on getting something going that makes the head knod in halftime, from there nearly any patch you put to it will sound good. Most importantly when designing the patches though, aim for simplicity, dont over-unison/distort them too much, you dont want things to get too obnoxiously 'big' , lots of smooth lowpass automation...
No help on the actual thread but to clear something up; Megalodon is actually one person now. Phil T was removed. Im assuming due to his lack of...Well anything really. When I chilled with him he didnt really speak much of his music (mostly because he didnt do most of it. At least recently) Cory is the badman behind everything that is megalodon. Such a G.

basically, all the HUGE artists were copying someone else.
a perfect example is Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit - Cobain has been quoted this is his attempt to rip off the pixies sound. the stones were copying the beatles - beethoven was copying mozart.
skrillex copied noisia and feed me - and HE'S the one that got huge.
