Isn't IDM the worst hit by this? Pop still sells, guitar bands can still tour, edm producers can dj, but the idm, for lack of a better word, totally fucked off, no?

Was having a half formed thought while buying organic carrots and considering the SNH the other day that ip rights are even more important for creators in the coming digital age because they will be the builders of the world essentially, rather than creators of discrete works of art.

Re: Steve Albini on Piracy
What kind of source are you speaking of? Would you like me to prove to you, that it was really difficult to buy music during the communist times in my country? (and other countries under the regime?) I think you missed the point that my 'anecdote' was only a reply to your claim that people were buying music before they could 'steal' it. Not everyone had a possibility to buy music. There might be some numbers, but you could just ask any folk that lived through it.Today wrote:so does this.ch3 wrote:These were not minority cases! No idea where you get that from. Patenting in the drug industry is a big problem though, especially with how the legal framework is set up right now. That's for another thread though. But intellectual property in general is a fairly gray area that needs to be fleshed out better.tyger wrote:another reason being that the most efficient economic system for healthcare is COMMUNISM.AllNightDayDream wrote:The entire concept of intellectual property needs to be reworked. It does nothin but make numerous industries sluggish and inefficient. It's one of the reasons American healthcare is choking itself at the moment.
you were going to say that, right?

Re: Steve Albini on Piracy
Basically all young people today pirate music. This can go two ways - either the person continues to consume their pirated music as a mere commodity, or a love of a certain music is instigated which results in a desire to support, or even actively contribute towards, that music.
In other words, the sort of people who would have bought jungle or whatever records twenty years ago are still buying music; the people who were buying "Now That's What I Call..." compilations ten years ago no longer have to bother.
I buy music now, which is at times an inconvenience when compared with its alternative, but I did not buy music a few years ago and I would not have been exposed to any of the music I now buy if it weren't for piracy.
I don't think this is a rare case either.

Re: Steve Albini on Piracy
"More" was the operative word there. Considering that only 19% of the 33% bought less and 47% bought the same, the math comes out ahead for music buying.Today wrote:one study of 2,000 people showed that of those 2,000, the ones who pirated music were 10 times more likely to say that they also buy an undetermined amount of music.
The other "think tank" had a sample size of 1,008 and revealed that of those 1,008, a third admitted to pirating goods. 26 percent of those claim to spend "a little" or "a lot" more on music. hm. 26% of 33% of 1,008. or about 86 people.
......
I'm laughing my fucking arse off at your "evidence"
