the sound ive associated with HC is actually the NY sound. Gorrila Buiscits, Agnostic Front, SOIA, Cro-mags etc....

400 Years is a good reference point too, given the topic.

hmmm personally I always got a more Glassjaw vibe from bands like that. But now that you mentioned it...
As for 400 years, only heard a few songs. Never really bothered to give them a proper listen.

Fucked Up, post-hardcore in theory. if they were around in the late 80's & early 90's.. they very much would be of the ilk. that's a good thing.

i guess the reason they get put in posthardcore is because of the vocalist and how easily he could be in a post hardcore band

but as far as song structure and writing style its so closely knitted with punk for me.

Even bands I've liked for decades now I don't view as authentic as Fucked Up. They're probably my fav punk band since like Gen-X (great song writers)

Wouldn't really put Agnostic Front in the same box as Gorrila Biscuits. GB were part of the youth crew scene, which pretty much paved the way for bands Earth Crisis.

there is direct post-80's NYC-hardcore too. some very valid & important bands in that equation & in relation to this thread

like Quicksand (ex Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, of course. later Rival Schools, Handsome..).

Definitely a major influence, specially Agnostic Front. They were really the first big NYHC band, and imo had as much influence as Bad Brains, Minor Thread, Black Flag etc. But for some reason they're a bit left out, though arguably NYHC is more relevant for hardcore today, at least the bigger bands and what's generally perceived as being hardcore (Hatebreed, Terror and the like).

Neurosis are great. But never really viewed them as post-hc. Sure, their early material was hardcore. But they moved on to their signature doom/sludge, which imo is metal.

post-hardcore ... once again, originally was no real defined sound or genre. post-hardcore went everywhere back in the day. the common thread in all the diversity is that the initial era of 80's post-hardcore influenced everything that came after, u know? no genre, just ideas. once again, the post-hardcore thang was just a vague term as it always has been, i see the supposed theory of it as a blueprint for many things that came after, its all good. i listened to alot of the related musics back in the day. still do sometimes.

You gotta draw the line somewhere imo, cause otherwise pretty much anything hardcore-influenced or that had some connection to hardcore at some point can be post-hardcore. Neurosis for me is a metal band, even their hardcore material is more crossover.

i'm older, & grew up listening to the late 80's & early 90's stuff right from the root, & still check out new stuff all the time.. hence my immediate references to this topic. as a fan of the musics, i've always enjoyed it all from a bigger picture perspective, & still do. at the end of the day, imo, to even use the term & make a reference to post-hc 20+ years on, as i've said before, the influences of what came out of it initially & what we're hearing NOW is what's important. specifically, there's always been inclinations in hardcore period to metal, post or not, crossover to just straight up fuckin metal. they cross lines all the time. always have - crust, grind, black metal, even industrial.. u name it right? very much a punk rock root there in MANY instances. for me, its easy to make the connections within those contexts. i've listened to ALL of it & still am listening. very much so
