my bad, my laptop is totally fucked over and my ableton authorization wont work on the family PC. and it really isnt looking like im going to be able to fix it. i can barely open the start menu. if i cant make music, which i cant, the label is shot, and no job im viable for around here is going to make me the money for a new laptop in short of 3 years. granted i can only work during the summer.

i dont have the money to professionally fix the laptop, let alone buy a new one, and every time ive checked, and there are many, reaper lacks the "Free" aspect im currently looking for in a back up DAW

expand on this. may be able to help you keep producing instead of having to give it up.

it wouldnt let me do anything. it froze the track pane, the sequencer, everything except the tool bar. i restarted it several times and the same thing happened at which point i uninstalled it and opened ableton in a fit of rage

lacks alot of elements, like the drum rack, but so long as the workspace works permanently, its all the full version to me because every single bit of my sounds is samples and VST's.
ive actually already got some stuff going.

Bad times BAl , what is wrong with the laptop? you said you could "barely" open the start menu. This to me sounds like you are able to Turn it on, (i assume it takes a long time, maybe 15mins?) Then i take it you are in windows but when ever you do anything it just freezes.

Does/ did you laptop used to get really hot?
How old is your laptop?
Ane ICE box can be as cheap as 20quid, and is a USB device that lets you connect your laptop harddrive to another machine. This should help you get some of your projects back,

Might be able to do something to help fix it thru people on here.
(Also contacting Ableton should be able to sort out the problem after all you paid for it, so should be able to swap it to a new machine. )

In other news, how the hell do you make a track sound abandoned?? maybe just stop working on it 1/3 of a bar after the drop?!

well i load it up and log on, in total, about 10-15 minutes yea. then the thing runs like a snail going the wrong way on a moving sidewalk. after it reluctantly lets me run some scans, which ultimately go nowhere, it freezes. the problem isnt in the core drivers which i found out from running it in safe mode, but in safe mode i cant really remove anything. and its too slow in normal mode to do the same.
Fbac wrote: Does/ did you laptop used to get really hot?
the few times ive checked, it was mildly warm. the fan does a nice job considering what ive got running. (intensive shit)
Fbac wrote: How old is your laptop?
got it new 1 year and 31 days ago.

A. as and irish teenager living in the u.s. im far too lazy to look up the currency conversions on that and B. ive got a terabyte external hard drive which ive moved all my files to whilst in safe mode. im not sure if thats the gist of what an "ICE box" is, but thats what im getting.

did and done and nothing back yet

with the original tune i made for this theme which is now void i assume (http://soundcloud.com/bloomingaudiolife/bjork) my write up(s) was/were
1. made it in one night and abandoned it till sunday
2. reverb. every thing is reverbed
3. 5 seconds in, you want to walk away from it, make a mug of le cafe, and walk back 2 hours later when your sure its finished.

The Reaper install does not work like this.
It gives you a nag screen which counts down and then lets you continue.
It's the same install for a purchased version.
I just register it with my bought key.

BAM do you not know someone wh's good with computers or something to have a look? In my limited experience it sounds like corrupted files in windows. I'd suggest trying to install ubuntu on there or something.

ps. Just pirate ableton for the family pc, youve already bought it once.

@Bal: Well good news is it boots up. Now i have a thing on my pc since doing a re-install where it will hang for about 15-20 mins once. When it freezes up have you tried leaving it for a long long time... (I will right-click on the desktop and get the spinning loading sign (vista) and then il leave for awhile and come back and if i see the rightclick menu i know its sorted) after the freeze I can do things.. I would suggest cleaning out your registry perhaps with CCcleaner, but if your unable to get it running then thats no good. What i would then suggest if you have your data all backed up is get that harddrive formated (this is the cheap and low tech way to go about problems imo) Then reinstal it all,, as it sounds you have software issues rather then hardware issues. Altho the main cause for problems is your harddrive getting old or damadged, which could be the case with you.
Doesnt sound like your machine is getting too hot, i ask this as many laptops ive seen, the fan is clogged with dirt and the machine overheats and shuts down, as well as runs slowly.
Its good news it turns on tho, I would suggest try what i said before,, (leaving the laptop in a place where it can get air to the fan, so not on a bed or quilt) Try and clean the registry (altho my tech pals say this is usuallaly uneccersairy) , next would be to look at the diagnostics... forgoten how to get there il have a look for you, but it basically says where the problem is so youl know if its your harddrive or a system file that is causing the last known error.

and lol at lots of reverb!
