Intresting..

When ever i play out 95% of my selection is non wobble, just nice deep meditational music. The crowd are mostly quite untill a big wobbler comes on. This obviously gets us ( a few other guys feel the same) a bit para as we think no 1's enjoying the selection or wotever. After the set though the feed back has always been 100%.

So whats the score with the ravers?
Is it that with the more minimal sound your more in a zone listening to the music?

With the dark wobble, however good or bad it might be it just makes u wana go mad?

Hope this makes sense, easier to explain then type..

Definitely makes sense. 100%.

A deep and meditative set will create a deep and meditative response... which irritatingly can be hard to tell apart from an audience that really isn't feeling it /is only treading water until a banger comes along. I think a lot of it is the classic dubsteppas' conundrum, i.e. "how do i dance to this slow stuff?" so it needn't be negative at all.

Just my £0.02.

When its minimal or meditative I zone out and just let the music take me wherever it's going, this leaves more of a lasting impression when the average wobbler is gone and forgotten in a few minutes.

agreed!
the wobble thing is more of the hyped up crunk time jump around shout to the dj stuff, which is totally cool but imho a bit less interesting musical wise, the minimal or summer etc stuff gets me very excited too, but in another way, somewhere deeper than the conventional raver excitement.
love that, and express it in someway, like a little text or drunken "omg you where amarlzing loveled yur set" talk.

ps, cyrus, you are the man in the deep/meditation/minimal book, for me.

sam
Well i have only been into Dubstep for about 5 months, so i dont really know if Dubstep has got too dark. Myself i love some of the dark stuff. Im not too hot on some of the really dark grainy slow minimal beat stuff. But i love Dark tunes like Goth trads Deep Medi, Caspa/Rusko Custard Chucker, I dont give a dub and such. The Bass the Wobbles are sick. But i allso love my calm relaxing Dubstep i.e D1 Mind and Soul, Orien Mexecan wave, Gravious Winter Sun- Fall Scuba Harpon Dream. So in my opinion i think its al jiggy. I mean theres lots of diversity in Dubstep. something for every1. I just wish i come across Dubstep long before i did.

It all depends on the night and the crowd, some tunes that aren't that mental or dark can sound really fucking intense if the mood is right. I have vague memories of Mrk1-never warned being played and the crowd going properly insane. Thats not that mental or that dark.

Also it's summer time, no matter what genre of danceable music there's always a move towards mental tunes in the summer. Folks just want to get out and go properly raving.

Plus bangers vs deep tunes isn't the same thing as dark vs uplifting. Loads of Skream tunes are big and ravey while a lot of Shackleton's stuff is pretty damn dark but as deep as hell.

The dominance of harder-than-hard rinse out wobble clones that you hear out in DJ sets is seriously bothering me right now, and has been for some time...[/quote]

yup

dubstep works best with plenty of space and dynamics and that does seem to have been lost a bit at the minute....

but like cyrus said maybe people just want to rave - but if every tune is 'massive' you actually lose the impact. Its like songwriting - you can't have the chorus all the way through if you know what i mean.

plenty of non-blokestep out there, just stop & think for a sec. ;)
While i love most of the list you offer, you gotta admit that it is mostly a list of exceptions, not rules. The dominance of harder-than-hard rinse out wobble clones that you hear out in DJ sets is seriously bothering me right now, and has been for some time...
didn't everyone say the same shit about the dominance of half step a yer or so ago, and that sorted itself out, the musics out there as you know.

Oh come on, it's still mostly halfstep though isn't it. For all the talk of more techno influence and the return of 2 step, this hasn't translated into what's actually getting released with a few exceptions.
Hmm....

Plus it doesn't matter because in about six months the entire scene is going to have been taken over by nu-rave kids or clownstep kids or NME readers or folkies with beards or whoever it is we're supposed to be worried about these days.

Erm, but seriously, that Random Trio post was really interesting. Must try to make some gesture of appreciation when I'm feeling a deep tune from now on.

Finding this quote more n more relevant recently...
"When it comes to darkness, I find it much more fascinating when applied subtly."

Just to bring it all back to the thread topic...

My thought is, Dubstep is for non-bitches.

That probably means only hardcore chicks are gonna like it...

And hardcore dudes...

Tough, gritty people in general...

And thats why it exists, cuz people want a lot of gritty grimey shit.

not some flowery, little japanese girl with a Hello Kitty purse.

Fuck that shit.

Funny, cause I've generally found that the people into really extreme hardcore music are generally fairly peaceful, nerdy types and those going out to chart house nights are usually the ones most likely to be sticking a glass in each others faces come pub closing.

It's supposed to be art/entertainment, not an endurance test
Hmm....
