- You said you recently had a breakthrough with your music,, well thats great now perhaps its time to focus on something else so you can breakthrough on that.

If your just making beats and bass,,, but your not finishing your projects your not getting much experience at mixing down, perhaps have a look into this.

Dont be concerned with "Ive been producing X years thus i should be as good as producer Y" That thinking may get you motivated but wont help. It can take many many years to craft your own sound. It sounds like thats what you want, your own sound rather then being able to make great Yois and Growls.

Dont knock the tutorials tho, as you can learn something else by watching them,, For example you watch a synth tutorial on a sound you dont really want to make but they make use of something like Feedback and you think, "i never use that" ,, next time you have the chance you might reach for that feedback knob even if your not making a bass,

Just my 2cents .. Ive been at it for years and im not as good as i should be, but i dont mind i still enjoy doing it.

The other thing i would say is collab on projects with people, be prepared for those projects to fail but you will learn something, for me it was shortcuts i didnt know about. (like ctrl to copy and so on)

all the best to you.

and if your going to show people a track but before you send it you have to write "its not finished the hats are abit loud but il fix that later and the bass is off but what do you think?" ... just dont send it use the idea of sending it to self-critique and fix up ur track.

couldnt have said it better man, its all about crafting a sound. ive been at it for about 3 years man and only gotten decent in the last 3 months because ive been watching tutorials and doing exactly that; reaching for stuff ive seen used, getting experimental, finding favourite synths and percs etc. good luck, here is an example of some experimental dubstep ive made, that ive only been capable of making thanks to youtube tutorials on parallel processing, sine bass, sidechain compression and using the parametric EQ. LITERALLY just those 4 things have expanded my ability tenfold. id highly recommend it.

If you want a method to improve yourself, set up a feedback loop. When you finish a tune or session, review/criticise what you hear, and update your process accordingly. Getting feedback from others like this (and acting on it) also works. Apparently alot of successful people had some kind of feedback loop. I'm a fan of giving general life advice which can be applied to the particular question, and again, a feedback loop is good general life advice.

Whats a feedback loop? Is that a group of people who keep exchanging tracks to feedback on?? This sounds quite good in the sense people would know the artist meaning they could say things like "your drums are getting better" "this mix is terrible but the one you showed me last week was spot on..." etc etc..

Another thing that may help you learn would be feedbacking on other peoples tracks. Or learning some techniques that people may think are outdated like 80's drum techniques... Gated reverbrated drums anyone?....

I mean the criticism feeds back into your process, and you update it (improving your future recordings). It is a loop because it keeps repeating.

Getting feedback from that peer group is one way of doing this.

It is also true that analysing productions (incl amatuer ones) helps improve your own.

you are the bset man! gated reverberated drums are like my favourite thing ever! <3 dat compression.
and yeah if you give other people feed back they (i dont know about anyone else but i do) feel compelled to return the favour and offer you big ups or helpful hints. i think a feedback loop would be rad if thats the kind of ting you mean. cos i love sharing my tunes and people get shitty about it (lol) set up a page anyone? :)

O_o I do like a good gated reverb on a snare.

There's the Dubs and Tunes for Feedback section here at DSF.

no im sorry but networking is on some level involved and feedback is importand but ALL of that marketing/self promotion stuff is about 2% of it. feedback is good. experimenting and researching is what its all about. :)
and the promotion stuff is only relevant imho if youre producing tunes on more of a professional level, until then dont worry about that stuff, just have fun and keep at it. :D

Im on the fence.. I get a boost in energy and drive to finish up a track if im going to show it to someone in real life... But i do think you should lock yourself away since you can A/B with professional tracks until yours are on par.

well everyones different man, i love dr pepper where others hate it.. same goes for production and promotion techniques i guess.. i get a buzz off knowing people are enjoying my music. but you gotta get to the stage where the music becomes enjoyable first.
